Ruth Unicorn(e)
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 11:52 BST (UK) »
I have a Ruth Unicorn in my tree who Married David Saunter in Northiam in 1822. Does any one have any more information on this family name in Sussex or in fact anything on David Saunters roots as i have hit a brick wall.  The IGI lists a Lydia Unicorne in Ewhurst but no sign of Ruth anywhere.

Welcome to Rootschat, Chris.

There's an ag lab named William Unicorn, aged 24, in Beckley in the 1841 census. Very close to Northiam, very probably a relative HO107/1106/1 f45 p7

Thanks for the info.  I dont suppose anyone knows who his first wife could have been?  He appears with Ruth in 1841 Census in Bislington but some of his children were born in Sussex and at least 2 of them in Northiam.  in 1851 Census i think i have found at least 3 of his children in Rye Union Workhouse including my Ancestor David (their Son) but David (senior) seems to have disappeared.
Next to the childrens names in the workhouse record it says son of Inmate, however i cant find an inmate with the Name Saunter who fits the bill. There  is a Martha Sannter but that also doesnt make sense unless Ruth Died in the late 1840s, He married a third time almost immediately and then died himself around 1850. ??? ???

Hi

I've just checked for a Ruth Unicorn(e) baptism on the SFHG baptism database between 1780 and 1810 and nothing was coming up for a Ruth at all.  :-\

In fact a search on Unicorne with no first name between 1780 and 1820 brings up no names at all.  Are you sure it is a Sussex family and not from across the border in Kent?

There was more than one David Saunter in that neck of the woods at that time. Here's one born 1799 in Beckley but married to someone else http://homepage.mac.com/graememoad/Family2/PS10/PS10_254.HTM
