Baptism of John Bunker?
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 23:42 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for a baptism record of a John Bunker (c.1837) who on the census had his place of birth given as Fort George, Inverness.  I believe his parents names were Richard and Ann.

Thanks.

New information suggest John's father was in the British army at the time.

1871 census has John Bunker age 34 born Scotland with wife Mary E Bunker living in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. There is a marriage for John Bunker and Mary Emma Pawson in Staveley, Derbyshire in 1869 giving his father's name as Richard Bunker. I assume this is where you got your information from.

Baptism records in Scotland are not all that complete so if his baptism is not in the Old Parish Records it may be that, if his parents did not come from Scotland, John was not baptised in the Church of Scotland. There's nothing on the ScotlandsPeople site and that's the most complete database of Scottish baptisms.

YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

I believe Richard was English and his wife was Irish and he was stationed in Scotland at the time of son John's birth whilst with his army unit.

Can't see an actual birth or christing entry for him so far. Unfortunately, official registration is Scotland didn't start until 1855.

Guessing John Bunker followed father into army? https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5CW-N8R

Yes, his father, his brother and his grandfather it seems.
