OOps... was there in fact a marriage for Samuel and Mary who I presume was a SMith, as her son was John Smith?

Getting confused here I am  :) Re reply no.7, the Samuel that Carol has posted looks to be a son from an earlier marriage, the one you mentioned born c. 1826. From Carol's entry, he has followed his father's profession into shoemaking.

I thought your particular interest was JOHN Smith Wells who married Isabella and has a son Samuel Smith Wells in 1850 (census entries for them on the other thread).

Yes,  that was why I entered the three original inquiries seperately.

Samuel Wells had three wives, 1. Margaret, 2. Agnes and 3. Mary.

You are correct in saying that Carols entry posted on Samuel bc1826 is in fact the son of Samuels second marriage to Agnes.

I have just in the past days started to look at this family again after many years. I came across an entry on Wells Scottish Researchers listing John Smith Wells and his family. This promted me to follow through and take up the search again for the Wells family in Scotland. Hence the three listings of family members I have been unable to find.

May I say again thank you for your help

Agnes Wells nee Carlyle, second wife of Samuel Wells. Who might her mother and father be????

Only details I have of Agnes is her death from a MI from the Middliebie Church Burial grounds.
Agnes Carlyle his 2nd Wife who died there 28th May 1831,aged 46 years.

Back in 1998 I did request a search for the marriage of Samuel and Agnes from the General Registers office in Scotland, however no trace was to be found. I did only search for the period 1810 -1814.
Where do I go next?

Hi Jill

Not sure if the marriage for Samuel and Agnes is there to be found unfortunately. From general searches, there are a number of people researching this family and none show either marriage details or parent details for Agnes.

From your original list of children showing for Samuel and Agnes, there are a few more showing on trees that you might want to follow up on:

1. Jane Wells
Birth:  1807 - Scotland
Death:  Aug 1836 - Middlebie, Dumfries-Shire, Scotland

2. Ann Wells
Birth:   Abt 1808 - Middlebie, Dumfries

3. Thomas Wells
Birth:  Abt 1813 - Middlebie, Dumfries (Dumfries-shire)
Death:  28 Dec 1879 - Dumfriesshire, Scotland
Marriage:  19 Dec 1836 - Dumfries, Dumfries-Shire, Scotland
Spouse:  Mary Gillison

From the 1851 census, Thomas above with sisters Margaret and Ann:

Thomas Wells 38, Master Shoemaker, b. Middlebie
Mary Wells 35, b. Glencairn, Dumfries
James Wells 11, b. Middlebie
Samuel W Wells 9, b. Torthorwald, Dumfries
Agnes P Wells 6, b. Torthorwald, Dumfries
Margaret Wells 4, b. Torthorwald, Dumfries
John Wells 1, b. Torthorwald, Dumfries
Ann Wells 43, sister, pauper, b. Middlebie
Margaret Wells 31, sister, pauper, b. Middlebie

Address: Dfs Road, Collin, Torthorwald

Sisters show as living with Thomas and wife up to at least the 1871 census.

With the above possible children, marriage for Samuel and Agnes pre 1807 - unless some of the earlier daughters were Margaret McNays?

Hi Monica
Thank You for all your help.

You mention in your last post, a number of peolple researching this family, how do I contact them?

You mention Jane Wells born 1807,Scot..d Aug 1936, I had information on Jane.

I did not however have either Ann or Thomas, or Margaret Listed later on living with her Brother Thomas in 1851.

As to Ann being 43 in 1851(born C1808) I would have to guess and say her mother was possibly Margaret McNay.

Given Margarets age is listed as 31 in 1851(born C1820) I am having at a guess that her mother would have to be Agnes as Margaret McNay had died by July 1809.

Samuel and Agnes did have a daughter, Margaret, born C1813 and died aged 8 years in 1821. Sp perhaps Margaret alive and living with brother Thomas in 1851 was born and named after her sister?

Thomas mother would also have to be Agnes given he gives his age at 38 on the 1851 census, (born C 1813)

From dates from the MI at Middliebie Church Burial Grounds for both Margaret McNay,Samuel Wells first wife and Agnes Carlyle, his second wife respectively, what is the next step to finding both these births ?

Margaret born C1771 given she died in 1809 aged 38.

Agnes born c1875 given she died 1831 aged 46.

Hi Jill

The trees that I referred to are on Ancestry. There are quite a number of people researching this line, some with more details than others. You can make contact via the site  :)
