I was wondering if he was the one bap in Dalton in 1811 ...

but that one shows up in 1841 - with parents next door - HO107/531-14/25/3
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hi, I've just been trying to look at a Dalton map for likely place!

I notice the enumerator seemed to put the county name first. what the heck could 'Clan' be?

I looked for Abraham Slater baptism on IGI, and the only one is in Dalton in Furness in (what is now) Cumbria.  Just south west of Dalton in Furness and just north of Barrow is a place called Hawcoat.  Barrow in Furness was in Lancashire and was a very tiny place prior to 1835.  The nearest church was in Dalton in Furness.

I wonder if what is written on the 1851 census is a mistranscription of  Lan(cashire), Hawcoat.

Added: Have read the previous two replies, but thought I'd throw this in anyway
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway

I'm still not convinced, sorry. As Pels pointed out the enumerator has written all the counties out in full and underneath Clan or Lan is Lancashire in full so why didn't the enumerator just put do as before?

Also in most cases the o is completely finished the letter which should be an o if this was hawcoat still looks like a e to me  and I cannot make the c out either :-\

But did that Abraham not marry a Mary Kendal?

Could it possibly be Wem badly written, short for Westmoreland

Hi Roger

Given this guy's handwriting, it could be almost anything!!  But Westmorland has to be in the frame  :D

Looking at the link that Geoff-E posted, there is a list of names mentioned on the site.  If you look at

www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=49334#s9

and search for Howyeat, it gives

Howyeat, Crosthwaite

Crosthwaite is 5 miles west of Kendal, in Westmorland in 1851.

So my money is on Howyeat, somewhere near Crosthwaite

Linda

Hi Linda

I found this on Google

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/yeat

I also found a place called "The Howe" betwen Crosthwaite and Witherslack

and on the Oldmaps site I found what looks as though it was a farm called "Low Yeat" quite nearby.

So my guess is Howyeat too, and that it was probably between Crosthwaite and The Howe, and that there was a gate there to stop farm animals from straying too far.

Only a guess of course :)

Roger

well the census says Abraham and Isabella which I think is my right family

she later married Moses Bowness in 1858
