kelton family, millers at kirkmaiden
« on: Friday 18 September 09 03:10 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Kelton family of kirkmaiden, millers there from around 1830s to late 1800s.  The ancestor I am searching for is John Kelton, Bn 1810, married Margaret Patty 1837, then emigrated to South Africa around 1843 - I am wondering what became of Isabella Reid, the mother of his son William bn 1833, Kirkmaiden. Can anyone tell me if John & Isabella would have come before the church because their son was bn out of wedlock?

Hi Godde

Some census records are available for free for this area:
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
http://www.dgcommunity.net/historicalindexes/default.aspx

John and Margaret may be living in Barony in 1841 with 2 sons.

The Kirk Session minutes may have some information about the illigitimacy.
I believe these are held by the National Archives of Scotland.

CH3/1575

Also there is a reference to a William Kelton of Kirkmaiden, Miller filing for bankruptcy in 1894/5.

I don't know if you are aware of the research on this family posted elsewhere on the internet?
