Death Duty Record Handwriting help please
« on: Friday 18 September 09 10:53 BST (UK) »
Is anyone able to decipher the handwriting in this image?
I can't decipher the subheading.
I think the first word under the sub-heading is IRISH, but I can't make out the second word.
I think the rest reads 'Balance due on judgment against ...' The last line is tricky. Could it be 'the Marquis of ...?'

Any suggestions gratefully received IAN

last line could be

... Marquis of Westport

but looks like it has been deliberately obliterated in part so could indicate that this is not what it should have said.
McDonough, Oliver, McLoughlin, O'Brien, Cuthbert, Keegan, Quirk(e), O'Malley, McGuirk (Ireland)
Dudley, Winchurch, Wolverson, Brookes (Black Country)
Concannon, Moore, Markowski (Markesky), Mottram, Lawton (Black Country)

Thanks for replies and suggestions received so far. The reason why I think the word is 'Irish' is that 'Irish Assets' are referred to twice - and quite clearly written - in the same DDR. Of course, I may be quite wrong and your suggestion of 'fresh' is worth taking into consideration.

To me, the last line appears to start with figures representing "one and a half" :)
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Interesting suggestion, Geoff, and I can certainly see what you mean. Though, if the previous two lines read 'Balance due on judgment against...', it seems likely that the third line completes the sentence - which does not of course rule out your reading.

I'm doubtful about my initial reading of 'Marquis' as the more usual spelling for this rank of the peerage is 'Marquess'.

It's frustrating, as these two DDRs I have recently obtained potentially hold clues that might break down a very long-standing brick wall.

Thanks again for your help IAN

Here's my reading of it...I can't make out the top line except that the last word seems to be a contraction of "Ireland":

... Ireld
Irish Inventory
Balance due in
Judgment against
the Marquis of ?Wexford?  1300

Thanks, Prue - the only way I can read that particular word is 'Marquis'. Now I need to find a complete list of those bearing the title Marquis or Marquess in the mid 19th century. Wiki has a list, but I'm sure it's incomplete.
If this reading is correct, then it seems that either my ancestor Henry Page or his executors had successfully gone to law against a marquis
