Belgian Roots- FREDERICK WILLIAM WOOD
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 15:45 BST (UK) »
Hello there.  I am trying to trace anything at all on the Belgian  side of the family.  My Grandfather (bn. about 1855- he was in 2nd Anglo-Afghan war and had medal for this, so he must have been born around this date) married a Belgian lady (Adolphina josephina Pendville).  They lived in or around  Antwerp.  He worked at the Harbour.  First child was born 1906 (Sarah Jenny Wood), then came George and the youngest Frederick.  They all fled Antwerp at outbreak of WW1 via Holland to Harwich.  Frederick William Wood died en route in the care of Nuns.

I have a certificate confirming the birth of Sarah Jenny Wood (needed for passport  and pension rights in UK).  This has a heading on it
`Gemeente Borgerhout).  Could this be an area of Antwerp where they lived?

Frederick William Wood was many years older than his Wife.  He could very well have been in his 50`s when he married.
Can someone advise me how to find out more.

Regards,  Rene Oliver

"Gemeente" means (roughly) local council, and Borgerhout is a district of Antwerp.
ANT: Nesbit, Potts; CHS: Gosling (Hazel Grove/Lymm), Hinton (Lymm), Johnson (Hazel Grove), Marsland (Hazel Grove), Massey (Daresbury), Sorton (Warmingham); LAN: Jackson, James, Potts (Manchester/Salford); MAY: Caulfield, Griffin (Leveelick); SAL: Goodwin, Johnson (Bridgnorth), Gregory (Wellington); STS: Goodwin, Gregory, Johnson (Wolverhampton); Hallett (Trysull); SOM: Dowding, James, Jones (Bath)

Antwerp archives site:
http://www.felixarchief.be/

They do have online some indexes to the "Vreemdelingendossiers" which are files relating to aliens in Antwerp.
There is a record for 1901-1915 for
Frederick William Wood, b. London 1854 (I think this is what the index indicates), it mentions Adolphina Jos. Pendville.  The index number is 113905.
he is not in the indexes on either side.
(This is the direct link to the image, not sure if it will work):

The originals dossiers themselves are on microfilm at the archives; it would be worth emailing them to see if you can purchase a copy or get the name of a local genealogist who can assist you.

Hi
I can't help with the Belgian side of the family, but possible births for your Frederick:

March Qtr 1854 Kensington Vol 1a Page 65
WOOD Frederick William

Jun Qtr 1854 St George Hanover Square Vol 1a Page 185
WOOD Frederick William

Dec Qtr 1854 St Pancras Vol 1b Page 3
WOOD Frederick William Matthews

Possible Census details:

1871 RG10 Piece 30 Folio 28 Page 50
9 Charles Street, Kensington
George H WOOD Head 58 Inspector of Nuisances ( ;D) b Essex, Benchurch
Sarah Wife 58 b Middlesex, Kensington
Charles E Son 22 Clerk b Middlesex, Kensington
Herbert F Son 20 Clerk b Middlesex, Kensington
Frederick W Son 17 Clerk b Middlesex, Kensington
Charlotte DEWSALL Serv 14 General Servant b Middlesex, Kensington

I thought this family fitted in well with Frederick calling his eldest son George.

Frederick born in St George, Hanover Sq, has father Frederick (31, post office letter carrier) and mother Sarah E (24) according to the 1861 Census RG9 Piece 42 Folio 13 Page 19.

Kind regards
