WESTMORLAND GAZETTE ARCHIVES ?
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 17:32 BST (UK) »
We are coming to the area at the end of October and I would like to look at some old Westmorland Gazettes 1940s and 50s.
Where are they to be found please. Is it possible to get copies of items?

Hi,

I should try contacting the Gazette.

www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk

They might be available in Kendal Library or possibly in the record  offices at County Hall, also in Kendal.

Jen :)

Copies for the period you are researching are available on microfilm in the Local Studies section (first floor) at Kendal Library, Stricklandgate. It cannot be 100% guaranteed that ALL editions will be available as the odd copy may be missing.

It is usually advisable to ring the Library beforehand to book a reader or reader/printer. Copies are charged at 50p each or free if you have a digital camera.

Good Hunting

Chris

Just back from our trip and visited Kendal Library.
We found my Grandad's obituary and various other things about him.
The only thing was that the copies from the readers were terrible.
Helpful staff.
Would have spent more time there but the weather was good and the fells beckoned. Torn between two whatsnames.

If you could come back today, the fells wouldn't seem so tempting. In fact I'd confidently say that you would be heading for the nearest archive/library/museum/pub, just to keep dry. It is grim and a half at the moment!

Yes, but there wouldn't be any lakes without it!  Hopefully some great autumn colours and clear winter skies soon!

By the way, there are also some Westmorland Gazettes in Penrith Library on St Andrews Churchyard.

 Best wishes
