1851 and 1861 census lookup for HAINES in Pontesbury
« on: Tuesday 08 March 05 11:41 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a George Haines b c1831-9 in Clunbury, Shropshire (listed as 1839 in 1871 census and 1831 in 1881 census. In 1871 he was living in Pontesbury district 4 as a servant aged 32 and single. In the 1881 census he was living in Pontesbury district 3 (Pontesford) married to Sarah (Trow) with 4 children under the age of 10.

I am trying to trace the previous generation of Haines (also found as Hains and Haynes depending on where you look!) and see if George had any brothers and sisters.

thanks

Alex

Hi Alex

In the 1861 census I have found a George Haines, 25, b. abt 1836 in Clunbury.  He was a servant for William Cooke, a farmer of 72 acres, and George's occupation is listed as a carter.

The residence is (I think!) Pultheley, More, Shropshire. (More is near Bishop's Castle).

I don't have the 1851 - he should still be at home at that stage - depending on his actual age.  Some youngsters left home very young to be servants.

Hope someone else can help with the 1841.

Monica
