Criminal Registers: Lookup Request

Hi Everyone,
The man in question is Henry Ashley Towell, my great x 3 grandad. I found him on the criminal registers, his trial is listed as being in 1857 in Hertfordshire and he was acquitted.

Can anyone tell me what the crime was. I would love to find out.

It was Devon, not Hertfordshire!

Yes sorry it was Devon, I'm getting mixed up with the other side of my family.
Is anything else but the crime listed on the criminal register?
By acquittal does it mean that he was let off or that he hadn't commited the crime in the first place?

In the 'Acquitted or discharged' column it just says "Bill ignored"
No more info.

So, yes, he was let off.

But whether he did or did not commit the crime in the first place ..... well we shall never know!
