Swindon (Highworth) Workhouse
« on: Monday 26 October 09 08:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi, does anybody have access to the registers for the Highworth Workhouse please ? I am looking for Sarah (Ellen) WALL born 1868 in Bristol. She was in Highworth in 1891 until she died in 1902 and had at least 6 illegitimate children while she was there. I am particularly interested in when exactly she arrived there and her circumstances at the time (apparently this sort of information was recorded in such establishments). I'm also trying to pin down whether she actually left before she died as her death certificate states she was there, but was a domestic servant so I wonder whether her she went out to work each day but then back to the workhouse?

Many thanks

Have you tried the following web site www.workhouses.org.uk it gives a history of the Highworth workhouse.

It does mention that very few records survive and that they are held by Wiltshire and Swindon Archives.

West.

Gloucs; Willis.Westbury on Seven.Hathaway Churcham.Sterry Westbury.
Glam; Hopkin.Daniel.Gethin.Brooks

This is great, thank you so much. When you say this is in the Familysearch catalogue do you mean familysearch.org as I couldn't find it when I looked?

many thanks again

Hi dhj

http://www.londonfhc.org/content/catalogue?query=highworth

This is the link for the Highworth films available for loan from the LDS FHC - scroll to bottom of page for the listing for the poorhouse.

These births are not indexed on the familysearch.org website.

There is an OPC for Stratton St Margaret http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealogy/index.php/parish-directory/item/91-stratton-st-margaret

Hopefully you can find out some more details of Ellen's time at the workhouse.

Glad to have been of help.

Cheers  :)
