Ann Cannon b.1829 castlebar missing 1861 census please help
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 10:57 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone help me locate the wareabout's of my G G G Grandma she was born in Castlebar,Mayo

I have found her on the 1871 census , living in Rochdale ,Lancs.

She is 45 and has a daughter called Margaret, and Sarah also a son called thomas..

She is also bringing up her grandchildren in 1891 and 1911.

Looks like maybe her 2 daughters may have passed away?

If anyone can clear up for me was she in Ireland between 1861-1871 census.

Also i cannot find her husband at all

I would be grateful of any help regarding Ann Cannon

          Many Thanks Lee

Is Cannon her married or maiden name? If it's her married name then birth certificate of children should list her maiden name.
Civil registration of births in Ireland began 1864 so there will be no birth certificate and first complete census is 1901 so you'll need to search for church records (if they exist) to find more information about her.
Her marriage certificate, if you can find it, may list her father's name and occupation. What about her children- were they born in England or Ireland?

Thankyou for your reply yes i believe her surname is her married name

Her daughter was called Margaret and it says she was born in Ireland too.

Her other children appear to be born in Rochdale

So it looks like she was married in Ireland had Margaret then came over

The only thing that puzzles me on every census she is the head but she continues to have children but there is no mention of a husband. ???
                 thankyou Lee

Good news and bad news.

1881 census (www.familysearch.org) has Ann Cannon age 52 born Ireland occupation hawker (age doesn't agree with 1871 census)
daughter Sarah Cannon age 19 born Rochdale

Is this the correct family? Civil registration of births in Ireland started 1864 so it looks like there'll be no birth certificate for daughter Margaret. Registration of Catholic marriages started in 1864 so if Ann and ? Cannon married in a Catholic church there'll be no certificate and you'd need to search for church records.

However, the really good news is that 1881 household (if this is correct Ann Cannon I've found) also lists her mother Mary Barrett widow age 83 born Ireland!
It's quite possible that Ann's mother (and perhaps her father) died in England and it would also be a good idea to check earlier census records to see if Barretts are in Rochdale area.

Others in household are daughter Bridget Brierley and her family and Bridget's birthplace is also listed as Ireland. Bridget's husband was born in Rochdale so they probably married there and her marriage certificate should list her father's name.

All the above details depends on whether or not this is the correct Ann Cannon in 1881 census.

Just read your reply your absolutely on the right Ann Thankyou

So Mary Barrett was born in Ireland but looks like died in Rochdale area.

On Bridget's birth it would say her father's name is that right? :D

                                Thanks Lee

Bridget was born in Ireland before 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for her either but any of Ann Cannon's children born in England should have certificates.

IGI (www.familysearch.org) lists 6 children for Charles Brierley and Bridget Cannon (all submitted and would need to be verified but it gives you a starting point to search further. See IGI for more details-
1. Sarah Jane (1868-1956).
2. Anna (1869-1940).
3. Mary (1871-1912).**
4. Joseph (1873-1938).
5. Hugh (1876-1960).
6. Margaret Lucy (1878-1949).
** St. John's R.C. Church is listed with her entry so that might be the church the family attended in Rochdale.

Can you list the details of 1871 census and I'll see if I can find anything further back.
