Registered this evening as I think we may have a connection?  Have a Harriet Carrot Halbert born to thomas and Margaret in Gateshead.  Sorry can't remember the date off hand (details not handy at the moment) but think maybe about1870.

Thanks Matilda, I have already been there, I am off Wi Pere through Riria Mauaranui.  We have just finished publishing out book.
However, the NewCastle on Tyne specific dates etc have not yet been verified.  I live in Gisborne so would appreciated any other info you may have.  The article you quoted comes from a book wriiten by McKay.

Kind regards
Trudy

Apparently Thomass sister was in London somewhere and married before he left, there fore this will be prior to 1835 when the National index begins.  He arrived in Poverty Bay about 1835, supposedly born 1802

Hi,

I don't know how much use it will be to you but there are quite a number of Halbert households living in Dreghorn, Ayrshire now.

Hi All,
I have just joined rootschat to join in your thread.  It’s very exciting to find someone actively searching for Thomas Halbert.

Thomas Halbert is my GG Grandfather.
His 6th Maori wife Maora Pani gave birth to my G Grandmother, Alice Matewai Halbert, 6 months after his death.

My mother has pulled together dates, information, and a single picture of Thomas.  I'm not sure if it's appropriate to cut and paste her word document here but there may be relevant information to help you on your search.

Here is her blurb on his death...  "On the night of April 12 1865 he was returning from a drinking session on board a schooner berthed in the Tahuheru River, when his boat overturned in the shallow muddy waters.

Halbert sank deep into the mud unable to extricate himself and was drowned by the rising tide.  He was buried at the Makaraka Cemetery."

Let me know if this is the type of information you're looking for, I'm more then happy to share what tidbits I have.

Hi tamarajean - do you have any other information about Thomas Halbert that hasnt been posted here? Im trying to find out how Thomas got to New Zealand and more details about his time in the UK

Hi

Has anyone found anything further about Thomas since this thread was started?

The researcher I paid in the UK found a baptism of Thomas Halbert in 1814 (aged 8) in Gateshead - right next door to Newcastle upon Tyne but no other records for his siblings or parents.

The parents at the baptisms were listed as Thomas and Mary Halbert.

On the same day a Sarah Halbert was also baptised to different parents. This could have been a cousin to Thomas.

Since found that Thomas Halberts full name was Thomas Lindsay Halbert, His father is Robert mother is Mary, Brother is James , His sister Mary is a Mrs Caret when he leaves London by ship for overseas.  He quotes his family home as NewCastle on Tyne
Still cant find a Robert Halbert marrying at the right time for the dates we are given.

Really would appreciate any help
Trudy m

Mary Halbert b 1816 married David Carrott b 1815 in Newcastle upon Tyne on 22 Aug 1836.
Marys sister Sarah Halbert was baptised the same day as Thomas Halbert in 1814 but different parents are listed.
Thomas was born around 1806 according to his baptism record.
Thomas parents were listed as Thomas and Sarah Halbert. This could be a mistake. His parents could have been William and Sarah Halbert which would make Thomas and Mary cousins.
If this is the right Thomas he had a younger cousin James who moved to Australia and had a large family

Mary and Sarahs father was John Halbert and Dorothy (nee Gibson).

Correction to my post below Thomas parents were listed as Thomas and Sarah Halbert not Thomas and Mary.

Were you one of the contributors for the book about Wi Pere? Where did the name Lindsay come from you have quoted? MacKay doesnt mention it in his book. Its not on Thomas death certificate nor the possible baptism and no other descendants have heard of it I have spoken to. Thomas never signed any documents with the name Lindsay. It was always Thos Halbert or Thomas Halbert.

Mackay interviewed Thomas Halbert II in his 60s/70s. THII was only two when his father died and he would have relied on others to provide information about him. I think THII got some of it right and some of it wrong. Very few of us would be able to recall memories of names, dates and places about our ancestors as perfectly as we would like.

No one producing books that mention Thomas have researched his English/Scottish sides. The Newcastle upon Tyne/Gateshead Halberts were originally from Scotland and emigrated in the 1760s
