I've been helping someone on another board whose ancestor seems to be part of this family, so I thought it might be useful if I posted details here, particularly as they emigrated to the US.
Mentioned in this thread is Delphine Buckland who married Richard Parfrey in Clutton, Somerset on 25 Dec 1823. She was baptised as Delphi Buckland on 17 Mar 1805 at Potterne, Wilts, the daughter of Barrington and Charlotte. In 1861 she gives her birthplace as Wisbery Wilts, which I think is probably Westbury, a few miles from Potterne.
Richard and Delphine baptised:
9 Jul 1826 Mary Ann Parfrey at Cameley, Somerset. Possibly buried age 7 in Chew Magna in 1833
4 Apr 1832 Elizabeth Parfery at Camely
12 Jan 1834 Aaron Palfrey at Clutton
As Richard and Philadelphia they baptised
21 Apr 1833 Hester Parfrey aged 6 at Chew Magna Somerset
21 Apr 1833 Jonathan Parfrey aged 4 at Chew Magna
22 Nov 1835 Parfery Parfery at Farmborough, Somerset (I wonder if this should have Purify Parfery?)
Philadelphia Parfery also baptised an illegitimate son William at Clutton on 5 Nov 1823. It looks as though she'd taken the surname Parfery even though she didn't marry Richard for a few more weeks. William was buried at Clutton on 14 Dec 1823.
I'm assuming that her baptism name of Delphi may have been a contraction of Philadelphia, but it also appears as Delphine
Now it gets complicated!
Richard baptised more children
18 Apr 1841 Julia Emma Palfrey mother Dalferretta at High Littleton
25 Feb 1844 Alfred Parfry mother Dalferretta at High Littleton
25 Dec 1845 Edward Parrfry mother Dolfereda at High Littleton
28 Mar 1847 Joseph Parfry mother Doloretta
There are three more children showing in censuses whose baptisms I can't trace – Timotheus, Richard and Henry. All three can be traced in English/Welsh and US censuses.
In 1841 at High Littleton, all born Somerset were
Richard Palfrey 40 coal miner
Dulerate Palfrey 35
Timotheus Palfrey 10
Aaron Palfrey 7
Richard Palfrey 5
Betsy Palfrey 3
Henry Palfrey 2
July Emma Palfrey 12 weeks
In 1851 Village of Treaman, parish of Aberdare
Richard Parry head marr 50 Farm labourer b Somerset
Filly Parry wife 50 , b Wiltshire Wisbery
Richard Parry son 17 Miner b Somerset Hiliton
Elizabeth Parry dau 15 b Somerset Silton
Henry Parry son 12 miner b Hiliton
Gullya Parry dau 10 b Hiliton
Alfred Parry son 7 b Hiliton
Edward Parry son 4 b Hiliton
Joseph Parry son 2 b Hiliton
I'd have suspected a second marriage for Richard c 1840 when the name Dolleretta first appears, had she not reverted to Filly (Philly/Philadelphia) in 1851
In 1861 in Aberdare
Dorathy Parfrey head widow 57 b Wiltshire, Littleton (she wasn't a widow and Littleton is in Somerset)
Alfred Parfrey son 17 miner b Somerset
Edward Parfrey son 16 miner b Somerset
Joseph son 14 miner b Somerset
In the early/mid 1860s they emigrated to Pennsylvania, where she was shown as Dularato Parphary in 1870 and died on 13 May 1883 at Old Forge Pennsylvania
I think I can put up a good case for Delphi/Delphine/Philadelphia/Filly but the change to Dolleretta defeats me.
