SERKWELL Family- 1700S - North Devon???
« on: Friday 20 November 09 12:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I've done a search here on this surname and nothing comes up at all!!

I have a Sarah Serkwell marrying (sorry, I don't have the info in front of me) a KNILL - mid 1700s - they appear to be from Bideford/North Devon area

If anyone has any of the above names, I'd like to hear from you

thank you all

Phil

She married John Knill on 9 May 1742 in Tawstock...........

No site seems to show ANY Serkwells..........!!!??

They had one son at least - John Knill, baptised 8 October 1760......

The information was given to me through research.

thank you

I would suggest contacting the Devon Record Office and asking them to review the name to see if they read something differently. http://www.devon.gov.uk/record_office.htm

Well, I have a print out of the marriage and it does looks like Serkwell or Serkwoth - how odd.........I couldn't find any baptisms but mind you it was difficult to read.........well and truly stuck.........

Hence my suggestion to have the record office interpret it - they are much more likely to be able to recognise the style of handwriting.

But I was there yesterday - one of the ladies was as stumped as I was - she went through the letters one by one.

I have posted the topic wth a sscan of the printout in the deciphering handwriting section - you can see the name for yourself - what do you think?
