Hickling Register lookup?
« on: Friday 20 November 09 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone access to the Parish Registers of Hickling? If so would you be able to do a lookup for me, the marriage of Samuel Howard Marshall to Hannah Hardy given as June 1843 under Bingham.
As Hannah came from Hickling I imagine that was where the wedding took place.
What I am after is where Samuel came from and names of witnesses if possible?
The Hardys were a farming family in Hickling and after the marriage the couple themselves owned a farm of some 300 plus acres in Hickling but it is not the same as that of the Hardys. Samuel always gave his birth place as Leicester but have been unable to find him.
Any information would be most welcome.

Hi

From the NFHS CD:

Groom: MARSHALL, Samuel Howard
Bride: HARDY Hannah
Marriage Date: 15/06/1843
Parish: HICKLING St Luke

Thought I would just check the Baptism records for you at the same time and seems they were busy as well, here's a list:

Robert MARSHALL, 21/07/1844, HICKLING St Luke (Twin) Burial - 11/01/1855 aged 10 (Scarlet Fever)
John MARSHALL, 21/07/1844, HICKLING St Luke (Twin) Burial - 18/01/1855 aged 10 (Scarlet Fever)
Anne MARSHALL, 13/08/1848, HICKLING St Luke
Letitia MARSHALL, 13/08/1848, HICKLING St Luke
Joseph MARSHALL, 21/07/1850, HICKLING St Luke
Hannah MARSHALL, 21/07/1850, HICKLING St Luke
Jane MARSHALL. 11/01/1855, HICKLING St Luke
Charlotte MARSHALL, 11/01/1855, HICKLING St Luke
Samuel MARSHALL, 06/04/1856, HICKLING St Luke

As you can see the first 2 were twins tragically both dying of Scarlet Fever close together, the rest were baptised in twos probably to save too many trips to the church.

Looks like Samuel Howard Marshall had an early death as well have found this:

Samuel Howard MARSHALL, 02/09/1875, aged 54, abode: Manor House Hickling Notes: Mad Cancer

Hope that helps you

Mike, certainly does help and my thanks to you for a quick and superb response.
Little nuggets of information build up the full picture, however I am still looking for Samuel in the 1841 so if any of you can add anything to that avenue it would be a big help.
Many thanks again Mike, very much appreciated.

Forgot the put in my last that Samuel was listed in the records as 'gentleman' so he must of been quite wealthy, have also corrected a howling error in his death year.  Managed to put 1975 instead of 1875 (bit of a blonde moment), also have found the following burial:

Joseph Marshall, 07/04/1898, aged 49, HICKLING St Luke

Hi again Al

Think I may of found him at Woodborough village with the Foster family at Low Part Village, Woodborough census ref:

RG number: HO107 Piece: 867 Book/Folio: 11/17 Page: 6

Details are:
Name                      M/F  Age  DOB   Born
FOSTER, Thomas       M    30   1811  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, Mary           F     35   1806  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, Ann             F     20   1821  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, Ann             F     15   1826  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, Ann             F       5   1836  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, Ann             F      65  1776  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, John            M      1    1840  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, James          M     40   1801  Nottinghamshire
FOSTER, William         M     35   1806  Nottinghamshire
WRIGHT, Thos           M     15    1826  Nottinghamshire
MARSHALL, Saml        M     20    1821  Nottinghamshire

Looks the best candidate from the census as no others come even close.

Thomas Foster was a Boot Maker but I can't make out what it says the work that Samuel is doing.

Hi Al

I don't know if this is a red herring or not.

Looking at other baptisms at Hickling I see there is a Joseph & Lucy Marshall baptising children around the same time that Samuel would have been born.  Joseph was also a Farmer.  When Lucy died in  1829 aged 39 her abode is given as Clawson, which is over the boarder into Leicestershire but only a few miles from Hickling.  Might help if you are still looking for Samuel's baptism

Apologies for not getting back sooner.
Much food for thought but I have to say that there were Clawson connections later on so that is looking very interesting especially as Joseph was a farmer.
Is there any chance you could list the other children baptised by the couple, Carol, so that I can compare names with later generations?
I will still keep an open mind and will investigate further but thanks to you both, Mike and Carol, for your excellent work on my behalf, very much appreciated.

Hi Al

Here is what I can see about that family

Jane bapt 29.6.1823 to Joseph & Lucy, Farmer, Hickling
John bapt 02.11.1824     Ditto
Enoch bapt31.10.1826    Ditto

I also found this on the IGI

Joseph born 4 Aug 1829 to Joseph & Lucy, Long Clawson
death 7 Aug 1829

Lucy Marshall buried 16.8. 1829 aged 39 at Hickling St Luke, abode Clawson.

Joseph Marshall married Lucy Hardy 2.10.1820 at Hickling

Hope it fits in somewhere
