Just found the 1841 and there is Samuel aged 15 in Josephs family so possibly cracked it. Will have to leave it until the morning but it is looking very promising.

Cracked it I think, thanks to your initiative Carol.
Joseph Marshall married second wife Mary Paget on 11th August 1833 at Long Clawson.
1841 for Sutton Bonington, Dutton Field shows
Joseph Marshall 50 Farmer b in county
Mary 53 in county
Ann 25 in county
Betsey 20 in county
John 20 in county
Sarah 15 ?
Samuel 15 not in county.
(Children ages rounded down to nearest five).
This would mean, if I have read it right that the family had lived in Hickling and then as Carol suggested, moved over to Clawson which is over the border in Leicestershire and where first wife Lucy died in 1829.
Only problem that I see is the ages of the children, Anne certainly suggests she was born before 1820 but Joseph and Lucy did not marry until 1820, coud Joseph have been married previously as he was around thirty when he married Lucy, or was a child born before the marriage? Still some questions to be answered!
My thanks to both Mike for his earlier information and to Carol for the Joseph initiative, superb work from both of you and very much appreciated.
Al

Hi Al

It's great when things start falling into place

I had a look at Sutton Bonnington burials and found these

Joseph Marshall 12.8.1872 aged 86
Mary Marshall 4.10.1872 aged 89
Buried at St Michaels

Thats put Joseph's birth around 1786 so he could well have been married before.  On the phillimore marriage index it does state he was a wid when married Mary Paget.  The children could have been step children if she had been married before.

Thank you again for the added details Carol.
Joseph married Mary Paget, it set me wondering if she was one of the Sutton Bonington Pagets, big land owners, was that why Joseph moved to farm in that place and why the family moved in 'higher circles' including royalty in later years? (A Horseman, the memoirs of Captain John Howard Marshall edited by George Millar).
