Hamilton Hawthorn Agnew born circa.1781
« on: Monday 23 November 09 20:00 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace the Agnew side of my family tree.  I've got as far back as Hamilton Hawthorn Agnew who was born around 1781.  I can't find anything regarding his parents, where he was born or his death.  I've tried Scotland's People and no joy.  His wife was Mary Kerr (sometimes spelled Carr/Car) who was born circa 1774 and died in Whithorn on  7/12/1857 aged 83 and was buried in Glasserton.  They married 27/5/1802 in Whithorn.  All down through the family there has been a Hawthorn Agnew in every generation.

Any information regarding Hamilton would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Hi

I see Hamilton (~60) and Mary (~65) in Whithorn in the 1841 census on FreeCen, they seem to be listed as separate households, but that may be a transcription error. The ages will have been rounded to the nearest 5 years.

I have not been able to find either of them in the 1851 census at www.dgcommunity.net

He is only listed on the census and marriage entry on IGI as Hamilton. Where did the middle name come from?

Does Mary's death certificate state whether she was a widow?

Hi Kirsty,

On Mary's death certificate she is described as a widow.
In the 1841 Census, Hamilton and Mary are registered as living in Main Street, Whithorn.  In the 1851 census, I think it is the same Mary that's still living in Main Street, Whithorn but no sign of Hamilton.  As for the middle name, I'll have to have a wee look to see where I found that out.
