lockerbie/y's
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 19:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
Can anyone shed any light on a Jean/Jane Lockerbie/y.
I have a Jane Thorburn born 1809 in St Anne,s Johnstone. Her father James and mother Jean Lockerbie.
I have James and Jean (age 55) in St Anne's in the 1841 census, the 1851, same place has Jean age 71, widow of James, shoemaker born Tundergarth.
If the 71 is correct then that makes her birth 1780ish.
I've found a Jane Thorburn death age 96, born 1780 with parents listed as William Lockerbie and Betty Moffat but hubby (dead,) listed as baconcurer.
Don't know how to check if this is the one (unlikely?).
There are several other births with roughly the right date but none in Tundergarth.
Can't find any births at all with parents William Lockerbie and Betty Moffat.
Have tried both the y and ie endings when searching.
Any help gratefully received....

Although the Lockerbie's I'm currently looking at (see below) are somewhat later than yours, you'll notice the unusual spelling "Lockaby" in the 1861 census record.

On the off chance that there is any family connection between yours & mine, I'd be delighted to exchange any information we glean.

Regards

John

Hi there John,
Thanks for that. Lockaby is one spelling I hadn't thought of.
I had a look at your Lockerbie's and don't see a connection as yet.
I actually have 2 sets of (hopefully) unrelated Lockerbies in both my grandfather's and grandmother's trees.
The other lot are Robert Lockerby (and 'ie') born 1806 Dryfesdale died 1883 in Holywood. He was an agricultural labourer and married Elizabeth Porteous from Ruthwell. They lived in Boreland in Hutton and had several children.
Let me know if these are of any interest to you.

Please can anyone help with more information on James Thorburn mentioned by Normatrees on 17 Dec 09.
I currently have a James Thorburn in my tree born about 1769 in Johnstone, Dumfriesshire. I have his wife as Jean, but I'm not sure if this is the same Jean mentioned, or even if this is his wife. I have his son John born around 1809 (died 25 Oct 1882) who marries Isabella(Isobel) Hamilton (b.13 May 1810).
Did John have any siblings, and is this the same James?

Thanks
Tim

Hi,
I've had a quick look at my Thorburn info. I've found the following:

James Thornburn and Jean Lockerbie/y children. (Lockerbie having both spellings with different children)

1   23/02/1803   THORNBURN   BETTY
2   31/01/1807   THORNBURN   BETTY
3   23/07/1817   THORNBURN   JAMES PRIMROSE
4   21/06/1809   THORNBURN   JEAN
5   05/08/1804   THORNBURN   JOHN
6   01/05/1812   THORNBURN   SARAH
7   13/03/1820   THORNBURN   THOMAS
8   14/07/1814   THORNBURN   WILLIAM

This would put son John's birth quite close.
I also have James Thornburn born in Elizatown, Johnstone 1775. Parents John Thornburn and Jean Beck.
There is James Thornburn and Jean aged 65 and 55 in the 1841 census in Johnstone with a Violet and Grace aged 14 and 15, could be grandchildren though.
All the wrong Thorburn spelling I know but it did change all the time.
Hope this might prove useful.
Will see what else I have.....
regards
Norma

Hi Norma,  I'm looking for a Robert Lockerby born around 1735, but I'm only guessing Dumfriesshire.  Do you have any parents for your Robert?  Any leads are welcome.

Hi,
The parents of Robert Lockerbie (he has Lockerbie as a spelling too!) were William Lockerbie, a stone dyker and Janet Saunders. That is all I have I'm afraid.

Thanks Norma for your quick reply.  Those are the oldest (other) Lockerbies I have so far, definitely a lead to follow.

Thanks to your hint Norma, I discovered that the Dumfriesshire parish registers are transcribed and therefore indexed in FamilySearch.  (Better late than never?) I am making entries for the older Lockerbies at least in my platform of choice, WikiTree.  Keep returning there to follow my progress.  I haven't found your Robert yet.
