Any idea what school in Birkenhead
« on: Monday 21 December 09 18:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My grandmother lived in Oxton Road until she was about 9 years old.  Does anyone have any idea what the nearest school was? I'm sure she said it was a church one and quite small.

Thanks  :)

Justine

Hi Justine

Depends wether Catholic or C Of E

Could be St Werburghs (Cath) which is in Whetstone Lane. or

or Christ Church School (one I attended) is on Borough Road/Bratton Road
Or Cole Street which is on Park Road South/Claughton Road/Alvanley Place/Cole Street.... very near to Birkenhead park.  all C of E

Thanks for that Mel!

I had a look on an old map today but couldnt really see! I'm hoping to look for school records if they exist in the records office in Birkenhead.

Do you know if they are old schools?  My mum went to see it in the 60s and thought it looked very old

Thanks again  :)

hi Justine

Cole Street has just celebrated 80 years, so i doubt in archives, maybe best getting in touch with school.
i think Christ church is the same era, as I know it was bombed in the war, as there is an old school pupil tale bout ghosts being in the school.

Can i ask how old your grandmother is? you maybe best contacting the archive for more info of schools in the area.

The schools I have mentioned are the ones I know in the area.

Hi Mel

My grandmother is not alive, but in the 1960s she took my mum to see where her house was in Oxton Road then walked a short while to the school.  She would have went there in the mid 1920s so probably not standing now

Get in touch with Birkenhead library, i have a niggling feeling there was a school attached to St Johns in Grange Road in Birkenhead.

otherwise it is look in directories first.

Or there could have been Woodchurch Road school, but not sure how long that has been opened. Along the same road as oxton road but would have taken 5 - 10 mins getting there!

Hi

Woodchurch Road School - that's where I went. I think the inscription says 1903, or perhaps 1902, but that's from a very old memory so don't take it as gospel. Certainly my father went there from about 1926.

Christ Church would nearer but the building aren't as old. Was there an earlier building?

What about the Woodlands school - would that be a possibity? Do I remember that name correctly?

Good luck
