Mary Ellen Street , Manchester
« on: Wednesday 30 December 09 18:43 GMT (UK) »
I have just found out that my great grandmother died at 11 Mary Ellen Street in Manchester in 1903 .Does anyone have any idea where this street was located , it dosn´t seem to exist now so was presumably the victim of the blitz or the slum clearances. If anyone could come up with a photograph , that would be great , I tried the Library´s photo collection online but unfortunately it wasn´t there.

Hi Dalmatian
An address search for Mary Ellen Street (on one of the well known sites   ;) ) gives the Ecclesiastical Parish of Collyhurst St Oswald, Ward of Harpurhey, Manchester.

You could back track through the folio pages until you find a road name that is still in use today - this would give you more of an idea as to where the street was located.

John Edwards, age 27, born 1874, born Warrington
Eliza Garstner, aunt, widow, 51, born 1850, born Aberystwyth
were living at no 11 in 1901
RG13 / 3756 / 22 / 36

Hope this helps

Happy New Year

Hi,

Click onto this site, Click Manchester 1930 map

http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html/Manchester%201857/Manchester%201857.html

Click onto 2c and then move page along to the right. Double click page to enlarge and you will find Streets named by gortonboy there. (B1)

Doesn't shown on any map I've got, and the nearest I have to the date is 1901.
Maybe Migky will have one!!

If you google Hamerton Rd ,Collyhurst, on google maps this is where above streets used to be.

Hi  :)

Trade directory, 1953/4  (kelly's), does not have it listed alphabetically, as a major street, but it is listed as a reference, as:

Mary Ellen St, Gorton St, Rochdale Rd 9.

Gorton St (9) hasMary Ellen St listed as joining  it, in fact there's very little left of Gorton St.  : Sequence is:

421 Rochdale Rd

South side

1 Garston Hy LeslieM B, R S, (Durh), physcn & surgn

Eliza Ann St

21 & 23 Cahill, Mrs Elizth shopkeeper
Keating Arth. Ltd, Iron mnfrs (Victoria Works)

North side

6 Clayton Alfd. haulage contrctr

Haughton, Mary Ellen, Wilkinson & Sterling streets

Collyhurst Rd.

so there are no more buildings on that side but four streets joining.

Were ther all tiny back streets end on?  Did the Works go the length of the street across four road ends?  Or, (Most likely looking to me), had all the area been laid flat after the blitz prior to redevelopment?

It seems plausible.  I remember being taken to see  the area in Pendleton where my family had lived and it just being a huge area of rubble.  And that was in the sixties.  I wonder if there was any more in 1927?  Maybe Migky will see this and do one of his great look ups?!? ;) ;) ;)

Happy New Year! :)

Mary Ellen St does appear to be still there in 1927, found in the directory of Manchester and Salford. :)

Mary Ellen St was still there in the 1960s, but by 1970 it had gone, although the neighbouring Eliza Ann St was still there. Gorton St had been renamed Kentford St.

Ive got a 1960s A-Z with Mary Ellen St in the index and as Emms says it is one of the little streets off Gorton Rd, but its so small that they haven't labelled it on the map itself!

It names (walking up Gorton St from Rochdale Rd) Eliza Ann St, then Houghton St (I think!), then the three unnamed streets - its one of those three!
