Presbyterian registers help please
« on: Saturday 02 January 10 13:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Does anyone have access to Presbyterian registers for Northumberland please?

The IGI has various christenings for people who are possibly my relations and was wondering if there were any other details in the actual registers that may help to confirm this?

There are christenings for:

Isabel ROGERSON at Presbyterian Warenford on 10 January 1771 (born 30 December 1770) to George ROGERSON

Three christenings at Presbyterian, Branton for children of John and Margaret ROGERSON:

George chr. 19 February 1802 (born 13 February 1802)
Robert chr. 3 May 1804 (born 16 April 1804)
Isabel chr. 9 May 1806 (born 4 May 1806)

Could someone please check these records for any additional details? Thank you.

www.archive.org/ has the registers for Eglingham (search for Northumberland) to 1812 and there were two burials:

Isabel ROGERSON of N Bewick on 1 May 1776 dau of George (and it may be her christening in 1771 at Warenford)

and also Eleanor ROGERSON buried 5 July 1776 at Bewick (Chapel) recorded at Eglingham dau of George and Isabel ROGERSON

A George ROGERSON married Isabel TURNBULL on 11 June 1767 at Eglingham and I believe them to be my 4x Great Grandparents.

My 3xGreat Grandfather is Thomas ROGERSON who gave his birthplace as Bewick Folly and was born about 1782/83

The naming pattern of Thomas' children would suggest he is the son of George and Isabel as does the naming pattern of John ROGERSON who married Margaret BLACKLOCK in Whittingham on 7 May 1801.

The burials recorded at Eglingham for Isabel and Eleanor would indicate that George and Isabel lived at Bewick in the parish of Eglingham so are likely to be my Thomas' parents.

The christening at Warenford for Isabel is the only likely match found and it would be great if someone could find the christenings for Eleanor and Thomas (and possibly John) in the 1770's and early 1780's (for my ancestor Thomas).

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated, thank you!

Kind regards and God bless you,
Lynne x

Lynne,

 Was at Woodhorn ( County Record Office) today and browsed in a couple of Presbyterian church records,,,,,,,,,,,

 Warenford church.
Isabel born at Newstead, within the Township of Newstead, with the Parish of Balmbrough  (today Bamburgh)

(Warenford itself with the Township of Warenford, with Bamburgh parish)

Branton Church.

George born at Crosshill Lodge , within the Parish of Whittingham (Crosshill Lodge and Crosshill within the Township of Callaly)

Robert born at Callaly high house (sic- lower case) in Whittingham Parish
( Callaly High House and Callaly within the Township of Callaly)
Ditto for Isabel.

 Branton itself was in the neighbouring parish of Eglingham

~~~~~~~~------
Time prevented me from getting into the burials.
What does " N Berwick" mean ?
 ? North Berwick was/is town near Edinburgh !
Dear Michael
Thank you so much for checking the registers at Woodhorn, it is much appreciated!   :D
It was just the christenings that were of interest so thank you!
The burial details were found in the registers for Eglingham to 1812 found at www.archive.org and were given just as background to indicate that George and Isabel were in Bewick (in the parish of Eglingham) in the relevant timeframe that my 3xGreat Grandfather Thomas was born. However, no christenings have been found - except possibly for Isabel at Warenford but a birthplace of Newstead throws things out a bit so not so sure now if she could be the daughter of George who died at N Bewick and was buried in 1776?! [N Bewick is short for New Bewick. There is also Old Bewick and Bewick Moor and Bewick Folly, all in the parish of Eglingham.]
Branton and Glanton registers only began in the mid 1780's and I've been told they split from an earlier church (no name known) whose registers are also unknown. Of course, the christenings for George and Isabel's children may have been in the Bewick Chapel? Any idea if the registers exist? Otherwise, I have no idea where to look really for Presbyterian christenings in the Eglingham area pre 1784. ::) Any suggestions would be most welcome, thank you!
Once again, many thanks for your help!
Kind regards and God bless you,
Lynne x
Lynne,
Ah, that Berwick !.  I did not know about those Berwicks within Eglingham Parish.
About Presbyterian Churches in the area...
I am looking at leaflet from NBL County Archives ( Woodhorn) " Presbyterian and Congregational Registers"  No sign of any Berwick ( other than B-u-T).
It lists the three you already have Warrenford from 1747, the other two from , as you say, mid 1780.
Also the GenUKI site is handy for sorting out what non-Anglican churches lie in each Anglican Parish..and what when and where for the registers.
e.g. Branton > Eglingham, Granton>Whittingham, Warrenford>Bamburgh.
The Northumberland Parishes are prefaced by an interactive map... which such facilitate you seeing what Presbyterian registers are in that area.
There is also a chance that you might find what you are looking for in the parish registers.
For example I found a full list of dissenters births in Ford parish records for the Presbyterian church in neighbouring Etal.  Listed under the heading "children purported to have been born"!
Hi - New request here but this seemed a good place to put it.
I'm looking for the surname of a John Park's wife Jane, and have found a baptism  record for their son George Park on 6 March 1786,  but importantly it was a Presbyterian baptism at Warrenford Northumberland.
This seems to have been their first child and so they may have been married at the same place around 1785.
Some links seem to point me towards the Woodhorn or Berwick archives but both are some distance away from me.  Unless anyone has any other suggestions.
Thanks, Gordon.
Earlier on this thread suggests that Warrenford might come under Bamburgh for marriages so you could try browsing the Bishops Transcripts in Family search? Or have you already tried that ?
