Llanon and the Bowen Family
« on: Monday 18 January 10 02:09 GMT (UK) »
My researches into the Bowen Family have led me to Llanon in Carmarthenshire in 1798. Am looking for help on where records of this parish might exist.
Thank you
Norman E

By any chance do you have any connection to Rees Bowen from Llanon he was a farmer who had a Son John born in Aberavon in 1844?

Sorry I can't help at this stage. I have a David Bowen born at Llanon about 1797, the 10 children from his 1826 marriage do not include a Rees. The background at Llanon is very tenuous and all I have at this stage is IGI members additions. I have been hoping that someone would know if  there were parish records in existence.

Sorry I forgot to put Rees d.o.b down. He was born in 1804 so maybe a brother to david? I dont have much on the Bowen side either yet but I'll have a look into it...

A suggestion is to join Carmarthenshire FHS? They are excellent site and have a wealth of information on their web site. Membership for the year is £20. They also do 30 Day and 7 Day subscription offers. You can also try it free for 24hrs here http://www.uk-genealogy-online.com/registration.htm to see if it might be of use. A list of what is available on the website is given here http://www.uk-genealogy-online.com/whatisavailablewales.htm (under Carmarthensire), membership also allows you to access to information from other Welsh counties, Pembrokeshire, Glomorganshire etc. though the information in these is not as comprehensive. You can then also join their members list and members are very helpful in trying to help each other out with their research.

A quick search of Bowen and Llanon parish church Baptisms 1730-1852 at Carm-FHS only brings up one Bowen a Maria Bowen Baptisted 13 Nov 1830 with parents Benjamin and Jemima

There are several Bowen marriages listed at Llannon Parish Church including presumably yours: David Bowen to a Ruth Morgan on 12 Sept 1826.

If you search under their master Baptism records. marriages etc. for Carmarthenshire then there are very many Bowen's listed

A general list of who has what Parish records are given here http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Llannon/
I believe church of Latter Day Saints centres have Lllanon parish records on microfiche, if you have a centre near you it would be worth visiting. You could also try E-Mailing NLW to see what records they have http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=18 and you could also try E-Mailing Carmarthenshire Registrars (Lllanelly and Carmarthen records are now held together) registrars@carmarthenshire.gov.uk and I am sure they would be able to advise you.

I spotted your messages while on holiday but as I was not signed on properly  couldn't reply then.
Thanks very much for all your hard work. I am just about ready to hand over my findings to my friend I and I expect she will want to take up your leads herself. I hope so
Kind regards
Norman

Llannon Parish Records have the christening of William Bowen of Caanan, father David Bowen and mother Mary Morgan, in December 1826. This William is my gg grandfather. The Parish Records also have David Bowen marrying Ruth Morgan in September 1826. I suspect that this is the same David Bowen, as William says his father is David Bowen (tailor) on his marriage certificate.
