McLean of Bethune, Saskatchewan, Canada
« on: Monday 18 January 10 13:59 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find any info on a John McLean, born about 1895 in Bethune, Saskatchewan, Canada. Parents John McLean Farmer and Mary Jane Boice. John McLean was a private in the 28th Canadians, Bethune. In 1918 he married Agnes Wilson in Edinburgh, Scotland whose mother was Mary McKay Wilson. I think he was stationed somewhere in England at the time. No trace of their deaths in Scotland, did they go to Canada? Any help would be lovely, thank you.

Agnes McLean was on the Metagama which departed from Liverpool and arrived in Montreal on 18 Sep 1919. She is listed in a section of the passenger list for soldier's dependants and was going to Bethune, Saskatchewan. The passenger list at Library and Archives Canada is rather faint but she's on line 20:

Her husband's attestion papers listed his full name as John Herbert McLean and on the passenger list entry for Agnes he is called J. Herbert however I haven't been able to find John returning to Canada.

By the way, according to his attestion papers, John was not born in Bethune. He was born in Campbells Bay, Quebec and was residing in Bethune at the time he enlisted. In case you don't have his attestation papers, here's a link to them at LAC:

There is also information at that link on how to order a copy of the file. The cost depends on how many pagers are in the file.

On the 1916 census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, Herbert J. McLean is listed as follows:

Hi Jacquie
Is there anyone you know who would be able to tell me if Agnes McLean had a child in Canada or to find out her death ? Any help would be very much appreciated. Or could you tell me a website where I might find info on Canadian births, marriages and deaths. Thanks a lot

The registration of BMD events in Canada is a provincial jurisdiction and privacy laws and accessability of records varies from province to province. In Saskatchewan births from less than 100 years ago, deaths from less than 70 years ago and marriages from less than 75 years ago are protected by privacy laws. The only Saskatchewan BMD database online is incomplete with deaths only up to 1917.

Your best may be to contact the Palliser Regional Library to see if any announcments were in the local newspaper. Here's a link to their website:
http://www.palliserlibrary.ca/

The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society will also do research but there is a charge.  Here's a link to their website:

Hopefully the book Jeff is checking might say something about family.

John Herbert(Campbell's Bay Quebec) and Agnes Landels Wilson (Edinburgh) had 6 children, and Agnes died 1953 and Herb in 1955.  Herb(John)'s parents were John and Mary Boyce in Litchfield Quebec.

There is about 2 pages of information on the Mclean family in Bethune if you are interested.
