Uvedales of Wickham
« on: Thursday 25 February 10 00:04 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching the Uvedales of Wickham.
There is an Ellen Uvedale in my husbands tree-married to peter bettesworth of Milland-Rogate
They lived at Colmere after their marriage. I am unable to ascertain whether she was the daughter of William Uvedale and Ellyn Gresham or of Thomas Uvedale and Margaret Norton.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sally

Not anything to do with your search but this name came up when doing a search.

Thanks for your replies.
I seem to be able to get Uvedale history but always missing the small piece I want. I have read the notices on the Uvedales  by leverson gower and came accross a will made by William in February 1567 in which he makes provision for his servants his and his wifes godchildren his monument and the addition of his dead childrens names - he made provision for his young son and heir Williams care either with his brother Thomas or his brother in law gresham-but no mention of a daughter Ellen-his wife Ellen died in december 1567(?perhaps in childbirth) William in 1569
A (submitted )family tree on family search Gives William and Ellen as parents and apart from about 2 trees on another site all of which seem to have been taken from the mormon site,
However british history on line for the parish of colmere states that she is the daughter of Thomas Uvedale and Margaret Norton. I don't know which one to believe.
I wondered if anyone could suggest someway I might find out.
Sally

Hi,

I've just registered as I noticed your post on the Uvedale's. I have been doing a bit of work on my family tree on Ancestry.co.uk and Ellen Uvedale is my 11th Great Grandmother. (Hopefully) I am still pretty new at all this but think all my information is correct so far.

I have her down as the daughter of Thomas Uvedale Esq and Margaret Norton.

Regards,

Collett19

Hi,

I'm also tracing this family - my 10th great grandmother was Ellen..

According to my records she is the daughter of William and Ellen - you say that in William's Will he mentions his brother in law Gresham, so it does look like the 2 families are linked.

I have noticed that daughters are often not mentioned in Wills, especially if they were already married, although I would have expected William to have mentioned grandchildren??

Hi Anna,
I have found Ellen gresham to be born on 24th may 1533 and listed on the allegations of the bishop of London as having married William Uvedale at St Marys Aldermanbury on May 8th 1548.and buried at Wickham in Dec 1567'
William died in 1569.
They had children John and catherine who died and whose names he wished added to his tomb.
His son William was said to be 9 or over at the time of his death but of a daughter Ellen said to be born between 1564-1566 I can find no mention. His will put his brother Thomas in charge of seeing to the estates untill his son comes of age and his sons education in charge of his brother in law gresham.
His brother thomas has children Elizabeth Frances and Richard. His will madein 1596 and put in charge of Peter Bettesworth is in Secretary script and difficult to read-Ellen is referred to as peters wife. the names Joan and Thomas Bettesworth are also mentioned.
In the Heralds visitations Peter bettesworths first wife is described(unhelpfully)as the daughter of Uvedale of wickham. I'm now more  inclined towards William as the father as Thomas's will describes him as Thomas of the Manors of Colmere and clairscourt drokkensford(maybe clerescourt).and that thomas and his wife Margaret Norton brought up Ellen.
I shpuld be interested to know details of your own research on Ellen.
on googling he name Uvedale theother day I came across an article "a name much changed" giving information on the family fro the 1100's

Ellen is my direct-line grandmother x .... too  ;D  I am descended through her daughter Joan Bettesworth.  I am interested and intrigued by your replies guys.  I too have found the British History details with the parents named as Thomas & Margaret but again nothing further to confirm this ?  So, I do wonder Sally whether you have stumbled upon the answer and Ellen is actually the daughter of William & Ellyn Gresham and William's brother Thomas Uvedale (and Margaret) took her to live with them after her father died in 1569.   I too am now leaning more towards William & Ellyn as parents...

Kind Regards
Angie
