O'Grady, Purcell from Kerry to Durham England?
« on: Friday 05 March 10 15:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello --

I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help me with a bit of a brick wall. My 2g grandfather was a Michael Joseph O'Grady. Sometimes just written as Grady. An obituary lists his date of birth as "29 September 1849 in Co. Kerry" though census information has his birth year anywhere from 1845 to 1849.

His parents' names were Patrick O'Grady (b. 1821+/-) and Elizabeth Purcell (b. 1820+/-) They emigrated to Co. Durham England after Michael was born.

Children:
Elizabeth? Mary? married a Cudahy resided Chicago about 1925.

Patrick

Can anyone tell me where I should look for birth info or marriage information for Patrick/Elizabeth? Elizabeth died in Pennsylvania in 1880. I've not found Patrick's death information.

Thank you so very much -
Debbie

I just did a quick search of the Kerry parish records at www.irishgenealogy.ie
and there is no record of a marriage for Paatrick (O) Grady and Elizabeth Purcell nor any records for any children. Two questions -are you sure they were from Kerry and are you sure of Elizabeth's surname? If you are the only possible explanation is that they lived in a parish where the records for the dates you gave have not survived.
Sorry about that.

Thanks for checking for me! I was a little surprised when I read "Co. Kerry" in the obituary. My grandmother always said she thought the family was from Cork. But... it could be that her grandmother's family was from Cork and her Grandfather's family from a different part of Ireland, as they met in England.

I received Elizabeth O'Grady's death certificate, which listed her maiden name, but it was very hard to read. The best I could tell was that it was either Purcell or Partell?

Patrick O'Grady often just listed his name as Patrick Grady.

But thank you so much for checking for me. The obituary is the only reference I've found to a specific county.

Purtell is often a variant of Purcell see this site it is quite good on giving variants.

However still nothing in the Kerry parish records.
