Women of the Crimean War.
« on: Wednesday 24 March 10 11:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi I have just read a book on the Crimean war where my g/grandfather fought, and read about some wives going to this war with their husbands.
I am wondering if there is a register showing the names of these women,. as I would be so interested to find out if my g/grandmother went to war.
The book,s name was "No Place of Ladies written by Helen Rappaport.
Hope someone can help me. wegsgirl

The army did not record details of wives and children until 15-20 years after the Crimean War.

Hi wegsgirl,

Women have been following their men (and fighting where necessary) in many wars.

Georgette Heyer wrote a novel of Brigadier Major Harry Smith in the Napoleonic Wars and his (14yr old) Spanish wife Juanita . Ladysmith in S. Africa was named after her.

Also in the "Victory" there is evidence that women lived on board and took an active part in the battle. Some were wives and others prostitutes .both would find another "protector" or husband if the first was killed..

Hi,

Both my x 3 Great grandmother, and her own daughter...my Great, great grandmother travelled with the army; the births of their respective children mirroring the postings of the regiment (47th).

There's a book called 'Following the Drum: The Lives of Army Wives and Daughters Past and Present ' by Annabel Venning which covers the subject.

I don't have it, but it can be picked up online for about £6.

Thank you all for your very welcomed information.
Oh ,they were hard times for females and by this book I referred to were not treated very well by England and money was very little.I am speaking for the non commissioned officers wives where as the officers wives in some cases returned to the comfort of a ship after spending a day viewing their men at war. wegsgirl
