Background of my grand father
« on: Sunday 16 May 04 18:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,
My grandfather was born someplace in Lincolnshire in August of 1864.  I don't know anything about his parents, but about 1901 his widowed mother, some brothers and he emmigrated to the States.
Up til about about 1952, my father has been writting to some of our relatives in England.
Can anyone help me from that end?

Hi,

Can you give a name for your Grandfather?

Do you think he would appear on the 1901 UK census, or did his family emigrate prior to that?

Sasha.  :)

Hi,
His name was Edward Rutter.  He migrated to the states with his widowed mother and some relatives.  I know he reached Ellis Island in 1901
Thus, between 1864 and 1901, the family would be listed on some census in England.

Hi,

The 1881 census can be searched online on www.familysearch.org.

There is only one Edward Rutter listed who is born in Lincolnshire:

Source Information:
  Dwelling   35 Hedon Road
  Census Place Drypool, York, England
  Family History Library Film   1342148
  Public Records Office Reference   RG11
  Piece / Folio   4753 / 64
  Page Number   25

Joseph T. Holmes, head, marr, male, 34, born Hull Yorks, wharfinger docks
Eliza A. Holmes, wife, marr, female, 32, born Hull Yorks
Gertrude M. Willingham, neice, unm, female, 17, born Hull Yorks
Duncan McKinley, boarder, marr, male, 39, born Glasgow Scotland, Ships Captain
Jeanie G. McKinley, boarder, marr, female, 23, born San Fransisco
Etienne Samson, boarder, male, 64, born Quebec Canada, ship builder
Alfred Samson, boarder, male, 32, born Quebed Canada, ship builder
Edward W. Rutter, boarder, male, 20, born Laceby Lincoln, Marine Engineer Apprentice

There is no sign of this Edward Rutter on the 1901 census, which can also be searched online (although you have to pay to view the full census entry) at www.census.pro.gov.uk

Hope this is of some help,

Sasha

Sash,
By 1901, my grandfather would be in the States so he wouldn't be on your census.
The age fits about right.  However, I don't have a map of Lincolnshire.  Would that town fit into it?

Hi,

Laceby is in North East Lincolnshire, not too far away from Grimsby.

Try this link for a map:

http://www.nelincs.gov.uk/community/maps/Closeup (then click on Maps, then Close Up Map of NE Lincs

Sasha,
When I tried to link in on your link, my computor said that page could not be opened.
Would it be possible for you or someone else to obtain his birth certificate.
I learned I could get international money orders at my post office.
Just let me know the price in pounds.  The post office would charge me $3 extra dollars.

Hi,

Sorry the link didn't work - try again on http://www.nelincs.gov.uk/community/maps/Closeup+Map+of+N+E+Lincs.htm

If you are having problems ordering a birth certificate from the States you could try posting the question in the Common Room - I'm sure that others will have encountered the same problem and be able to advise you.

Sasha.

Sasha,
I have posted a number of Rutters in the common room which I think might be my grandfather's relatives.  They are too numerous to search fully, but one or two might prove useful.
