GEELAN
« on: Sunday 28 March 10 13:37 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for Geelan's from Longford. I'm looking particularly for information on Coote Geelan and his father John. John Geelan was born 1777 Cloonageeher, Longford and married Mary Nisbitt. John's son Coote was born 12 May 1820 and married Jane Bothwell.

Coote had a son named Christopher James who migrated to Australia and had a family there. I am unsure if Coote and his wife also moved to Australia. I am trying to find John Geelan's family to add to my tree but due to the fact that I'm in Australia and all the records are in Ireland It's a very difficult task. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect Coote was a nickname rather than his real name. There are a number of Geelan records in Longford on the IFHF site http://www.irish-roots.ie/ but records don't start until the 1820s so you won't be able to go back too far.

The name COOTE is still being used and there is a Coote Geelan listed in
the Electoral Roll for county Longford as of 2003/4.
