Henry Lancaster
« on: Monday 29 March 10 09:55 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my family tree back and looking for some help please.

Information is sketchy (I had some information on my old computer which crashed so am relying on my memory here) and may not be accurate.

I'm looking for information on Henry Lancaster born abt 1839 in Birmingham, Warwickshire who was a Blacksmith and had a son called Thomas (born abt 1859), who became a Journeyman and was also in the Army where he was posted to Kent.

Thomas had 13 children with Helena Hutchinson (born abt 1873 to William and Jane Hutchinson) one of which was my Grandfather Robin Lancaster born in 1910 in Dover, Kent. Robin served in the Royal Navy and before WW2 was posted to New Zealand, marrying my Grandmother Kathleen Cuneen, doing coastal survey until war broke out where he served in Europe. He came back to New Zealand after the war and never went home, dying in Hamilton in 1969.

The trail seems to end with Henry Lancaster, who may or may not have been Thomas's father (That is the sketchy part).

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

What does Thomas say about his father when he marries Helena then?  :)

This 1871 census seems to tie in nicely:

Hi Aaron and welcome :)

As Tati says, the marriage certificate ought to tell you the name and occupation of Thomas's father.

In case you don't already have it, this seems likely to be the reference:

Marriage Sep qtr 1891

Thomas LANCASTER
Helena HUTCHINSON

on same page, Dover 2a 1640.

The marriage certificate can be ordered online from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Thanks for the welcomes and thanks very much for your assistance.

I had a copy of Thomas and Helena's marriage certificate on my crashed computer which gave Thomas' father as Henry, born abt 1839 in Birmingham, Warwickshire (going from memory here - unfortunately I have lost the marriage certificate when the pc crashed).
This was the only clue I had to continue the Lancaster side of the tree. The marriage certificate gave Helena's Father as William Hutchinson with a witness Jane Hutchinson and upon trawling through google I found on the LDS website a census record which showed Jane as Williams wife...however I cant find anything further back than William and Henry

Even though I am a complete novice at Genealogy I am very keen to trace back as far as possible. My uncle engaged a UK based Geneologist a few years but he only got as far as Thomas' marriage cert so I'm hoping the spirit of the internet discussion forums will help advance me on this one. So far I you guys have left me impressed.

Cheers
Aaron Lancaster

What puzzles me is that marriage certificates don't give the age of fathers, so I'm not sure where Henry's birth year of 1839 could have come from.

The Henry Lancaster, Blacksmith born ca 1839 Birmingham as found by Kerry doesn't appear to have had a son Thomas.

See this is where my memory is patchy (I started this 2 years ago and got sidetracked on my Mothers side of the family and am just returning to Paternal side). I cant remember where I found that information. I might need to sit down for a while and try and remember wher that information came from
