**COMPLETED**Buchan, Blacksmith, Montrose. 1900
« on: Thursday 22 April 10 13:15 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if James Lawrence Buchan had his own smithy in Montrose around 1910.

He was born in Aberdeen c1873, moved to Brechin with his parents and other siblings c1875.  His father was William Buchan, c1839 and mother Christina Lawrence, c1840. (she was born in Brechin). In the 1901 census the family lived at 25 st Johns Cottages, Brechin.  William was a Blacksmith employer.

James married Jessie McDonald in 1904 and they had at least 3 children, Mabel,1905, James 1906 and Rhoda 1909.  In 1909 the family lived at 13 North Esk Road, Montrose.

If James had his own business, I would be grateful to know the dates and where he was...if possible.

I am trying to rule out emigration for the family.

Many thank,
Lynda

Hi Lynda  :)

Nothing on the smithy but there is an entry on the passenger lists showing a James L Buchan, a Mrs Jessie Buchan, Mabel Buchan and Rhoda Buchan leaving London on  23 May 1912 for Adelaide aboard the Geelong.

His occupation was given as Blacksmith and he was 39 at the time (dob approx 1873)

Ohhh Gadget you have found them... thank you so much, I will follow it up.  I had heard vaguely that they may have gone abroad but no one knew where.  The searches for marriages and deaths came up with nothing.

Once again, many thanks.

Hi Folks,

I have got a reply from Australia already...am so amazed.... Jessie died in 1936 in Adelaide and James in 1957.  Merlin is going to do some other look ups for me...I have spent months checking this out and you folks sort it in an hour....amazed again.

Many thank,
Lynda

I would be interested to know about the Smithy, James Buchan as he looked after my Great Grandmother, Catherine Walker Buchart at the blacksmiths around this time. Do any records mention her at all?

Well, I was asking about the possibility about a Blacksmith.  James was a blacksmith.  His father William Buchan, c1840 was born in Aberdeen and seemed to be the employer.  in the 1901 census William and his family, Chritina, (wife), James, Annie, and Beatice were living at 25 St Johns Cottages, Montrose.  William is listed as the 'employer' as he has through out most of the census.  I have found that James married Jessie McDonald and they and their family emigrated to Austrailia in 1912.  Jessie died in 1936 and James in 1957.  Unfortunately, your Catherine is not mentioned with them.  Have you tried looking at the census report under her name?

Does this help you?

regards,
Lynda

Thanks for your reply. I will talk to my Mother and see if she can be more specific. As we live in England and have never really looked into this deeply, is it easy to view the Scottish Census records? Any advice would be most appreciated and thank you for your time.

Hi Shona,
It is just about the same as veiwing them anywhere else.  I use Scotlands People which is a pay per view.  The minimum credits that you can buy is £6.  It cost 1 credit to veiw the selection and then if yo choose one of those selected it is 5 credits.  I am probably more used to using it as this is how I have done most of my research for births deaths and marriages.  There is also family search, (IGI), Ancestry.  These are also pay per view.  There are many others and it really depends on what works for you.  If  your stuck just pm me and I will try to help if I can.

Regards,
Lynda
