Hi Sue

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but didn't get an email notification ???

You say you found William in 1851 as a lodger, have you now found Benjamin and Julia?

Have you managed to convince yourself that you have the correct baptism record?

Jan

Hi Jan,
To date I have not managed to find any info on Benjamin & Julia    ???
Benjamin was a Locksmith by trade.

The earliest reference of William Burton was aged 18 lodging
in Wolstanton, Staffordshire on the 1851 census.
I am certain this is my William as he shares the household with
other lodgers which turn out to be his future brother-in-laws.

Shropshire Archives confirmed that this baptism was the only William Burton
born between 1829-1833 in the Madeley area.

I am yet to prove or disprove this is the correct William.    :-\

A difficult one Sue!!

On the baptism record of William does it say that Benjamin and Julia are also Burton.  The reason I ask is on his marriage certificate there is no father's name so I am assuming that he was illegitimate ???  I have found in such cases of illegitimacy the child was often given the mother's surname, not the known father's surname.

It might be worth asking the Archives to look again, but this time further than 1833.  It is possible that William's age in the census was incorrect.  I have come across many of my ancestors whose ages in the census didn't match with their birth certificates!!!  Just a thought.

On a final note, who are the witnesses on the marriage certificate.  Sometimes they were relatives, which may give you a couple more clues.
