Ursula Dodds/William Wake
« on: Sunday 16 May 10 03:54 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on my Great Grandmother, Ursula Dodds.
All I can trace is that she was born at Mount, County Durham in 1844, and she married my Great Grandfather William Wake 28th June 1865 at the Parish of St.John, Newcastle upon Tyne.
I think her father was Joseph Dodds, who may have died in Antigua!
He may have worked on the railways.
I have no information about her mother.

could her name have possbly been rachel ursula dodds
having said that i cannot at this time find a birth for rachel either.
maybe the birth was not registered
i seem to remember seeing somewhere that there were births that were never registered during this timeframe

Hi,

There is a marriage of an Ursula Dodds to a man with the first name of William on the free bmd; I hope this might help you in your search.

Surname     First name(s)          District      Vol     Page
Marriages Jun 1865   (>99%)
Dodds    Ursula        Newcastle T.    10b   147

Actually, his full name is William Wake (just discovered this after I had put the first post on):
Surname     First name(s)          District      Vol     Page
Marriages Jun 1865   (>99%)
Wake    William        Newcastle T.    10b   147

It says Newcastle, rather than County Durham, not quite sure why...
Sorry Jakezed, I have just read the first post again and you have already mentioned that they were married in Newcastle upon Tyne.  The marriage certificate might give you some more clues, if you do not already possess a copy of it.

Kind regards,
Michael

Here is the family in 1851.
Joseph aged 37 born Wylam,a labourer
Margaret aged 38 born Newcastle,
Ann aged 10 born Gosforth
Rachel aged 8 born Ayton Banks,
Isaba Huttson aged 4,
I found this a bit hard to read, address, Haswell ,Durham, Easington, South Pelton
so sorry if the address doesnt make sense ,
1871 census ,Jarrow ,
Ursula has been spelt as Orvilleie Wake  born Jarrow ,
William aged 27 a blacksmith,
Margaret Jane aged 3,
William Roberts aged 38 ,
Elizabeth Roberts aged 22,
very scribbled on so I cant be sure of the relationship between the Roberts and Wakes
this would tie them to the 1881 census as William is a blacksmith, and little Margaret is born Jarrow,
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston

Antigua had a railway as most of the sugar growing islands did or still have railways.

28  June 1865 St. John's Newcastle-upon-Tyne, married William Wake, Bachelor, Occ. Smith. Ursula Dodds, Spinster. Both of this Parish. Both of Full Age. His father John Wake, Gardener. Her father Joseph Dodds, PLATELAYER. He was a railway man.  FHLF 2193425

I only found one child of the above couple.  Ursula dau. of William and Ursula Wake born Deptford 26 MAY 1880 and baptized Chapelry of Deptford, County Durham, 23 June 1880.
Father's Occ. Blacksmith, abode 7, Hillfield, Deptford. FHLF 1894621.

Antigua deaths are available on film but I checked and could not find any Dodd deaths there. FHLF 1933453/1933449.
