Piercebridge and quakers
« on: Friday 04 June 10 20:09 BST (UK) »
Hello.

Can someone tell me which quaker meeting house people would have likely to have attended if they came from or lived in Piercebridge?

Also which parish would PB have belonged to?

Yours Northerngirl.

Hi Northerngirl.

Do you mean Piercebridge near Darlington, County Durham?

If so, the pages of this site may be of help.

Hello Finbar.

Thank you for your reply.  I think the two areas are so close that it could be one or the other; though it seems that PB was in Yorkshire.

I've had a look at your link. Thank you very much for that too.

NG.

I'm not sure which two areas you are referring to, but as far as I know there is only one Piercebridge and it is on the Durham side of the bridge over the Tees. Darlington is the nearest main town with Quaker connections (hence the nick-name of their football team).

can we have a clue as to why you are asking?

Regards,
Colin

Hi Colin.

Thank you for your reply.

I am trying to do some research on Elizabeth Peace of Feethams who married John Nichol.  She had a family friend/servant who moved with her to Edinburgh when she married. I would like to write a paper (purely amateur woman's history of course) on this woman and know from the census information that she was born in Piercebridge.  I was curious to find out if Christina Carter was a Quaker like Elizabeth Pease was.  If Darlington was the nearest meeting house I can surmise that she may have been a Quaker or was closely linked with the Quakers.

Yours NG

P.S.  I think that Christina may have had a brother called Nicholas Carter - if anyone is looking for him!!

Hi NG,

I'm a bit baffled as to who you are researching. Elizabeth Pease of Feethams or Christina Carter of Piercebridge, her faithful servant?

In the Bishops Transcripts at Familysearch.com there are some records from the Quaker Burials listed under Darlington which might give you some indication of families involved, and there is a lot of information on the Pease families in Darlington Library, Local Studies section. I'm sure that an email to Katherine Williamson would give you some good pointers.

Regards,
Colin

Hello Colin.

Sorry I was thrown off the internet half way through reading your reply and it has taken a lot of effort just to get back on again.

Elizabeth Pease Nichol is my ultimate research project. However, I was wondering if Christina Carter was a Quaker.  The census information tells me that she was born at Piercebridge.

Yours NG.

Hello NG,

Christina sounds as though she was a valued servant of Elizabeth, but I think it is unlikely that she was a Quaker.

Which way are you researching Elizabeth Pease? After her marriage or before?

Do you have her on any census and do you know her parents?

Colin

Hi Colin.

Thanks once again for the reply.

I am interested in her both before and after her marriage, but more so before.
