A very useful text which I have used for Mid-Louth is the
History of Kilsaran and Union parish of Louth, by Rev J.B.Leslie.

There is a web page dedicated to the Hoy family of PA (USA) who have roots in Newragh and Darver parish , in particular. This is a good 10km or more North and West of Kilsaran. They were originally Hoeys who shortened the name, I assume, when naturalising in the USA.

Thank you.  This looks really interesting.  I'm going to have a good look with all the stuff I've got.  I've actually seen that site before but I had no idea where the placeswere.  Your local knowledge is invaluable.

Thank you very much!

Best wishes

Hi

I'm not actually sure.

I'm still looking at this group but I'm getting more and more sure that my Hoey family originate in this area and came via Dublin.

I've recrently discovered that two of my Hoeys were baptised in Duiblin after their parents were married in England where they returned afterwards.

I have came across a Holland but I'm not sure where.

I'll have a look and get back.

I'd love to swap information when I've had a look.

By the way, this is just under Waterloo because I'm on her computer.

Thank you for replying.  I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it eventually.

Did your family stay in Ireland?

Best wishes

Emms

 :) Hello Emms.

My family lived in the Dundalk area before moving to England in the early 1950's. I have discovered that Joseph Holland and Rose Hoey were my great grandparents on my mothers side. I have a Photocopy of the marriage certificate of Joseph Holland and Rose hoey dated September 29th 1890 listing Joseph Holland as a postman who resided at Blackrock, whose fathers name was Nicholas Holland Deceased who was listed as a farmer. Rose Hoey was listed as being a resident from Mullaghearafferty, and whose father was listed as being a James Hoey deceased, he was listed as being a farmer.
Hope this helps, even if it does not help it is still good to talk.
Take care and good luck.
Alphonsus Gerard Matthews.

For what it is worth ...
My wife's Great Grandparents were Francis Mathews and Mary Hoey.
Mary was born in Scotland, with a father in the British Army.
There was a lot of movement between Ireland and Scotland in the mid to late 18thC.
Mary seems to have also had a connection with Bessbrook (just outside Newry), and it may be that a sister married there.

Hi Alphonsus, DrJeff, Jack

Thank you for all your replies.  I apologise, I only just got properly back on line, so I haven't replied to any of you.

Thank you for all your posts.

I'll have a proper look and get back to you all but it's all interesting stuff if it;s on the Hoey's.

Thank you again.

Best wishes
