I do not have a sub for the 1911 census, however findmypast are having a freebie tomorrow.

You don't have to be a subscriber to check the index - Sydney (with a Y) is there,  that you can do today.  Perhaps you may get the chance to have a look at the transcription and image tomorrow.

Good idea - I had a successful day last Friday on the 1911!  I have found a marriage for Sydney so he obviously made it through past 1911!

Hi Ceeoh
Found him in the 1911 - will have a proper look tomorrow, but Elizabeth was also listed.
Googled Grosmont and it looks to be about 5 miles from Whitby but is in the registration area of Whitby.
Very frustrated because William Helm Soulsby married in 1892 and it states on freebmd that it was either a Hannah Brown or Mary Brown, so whether he married again and is just not listed.  Which would mean that my great great aunt was his 3rd wife.  These ancestors are sent to try us ;)

Hi there,

Again, I have just seen this post.

I am trying to locate and find out about my family, all of which I know (very little bar the help of Ancestry and Google) is that I had a grandfather called Arthur who was born 4th of October 1916 in Whitby.

I am 25 years old, born in Hammersmith, London in 1992, male and caucasian.

I was told unsurely, that my great grandfather in other words, Arthur Slater who was my grandfather's father was also born in Whitby, around 1884. He had sisters and brothers, from what I have googled...

Feel free to message me.

Regards,

George Slater

Have not found him on 1939 register, however, it would appear that Arthur born 1916 : mother possibly Ada Ann House.

8 registrations for birth Whitby, father Slater mother House, between 1910 and 1928.

Following needs checking:

William Thomas Slater married Elizabeth Filburn 4th quarter 1873, registered Whitby
1881 Census William and Elizabeth,  Grape Lane Whitby, William a jet worker.
1891 census Elizabeth a widow, Silver Street, Ruswarp, with 4 sons (including Arthur born 1885) and 3 daughters.
1901 Elizabeth now aged 44, 2 Haggersgate, Whitby.  Arthur age 16 grocer's errand boy.

Hope this helps.
