'Braide' name meaning/origin
« on: Thursday 01 July 10 09:35 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I've seen refs to a 'Braide' Christopher Armstrong & a 'Braide' Crystell Armstrong in 16th C records. Can anyone tell me what 'Braide' means? Is it a common prefix? Also, is Crystell a form of Christopher?
Cheers,
Bob
PS I'm guessing it means 'broad', but would like expert confirmation!

Hi Bob

Great site for first name variants:

Crystal (male version) = Christopher

Hi Bob
re BRAIDE
Probably an anglicised attempt at a Scottish accent.
Scots would be more likely to say BROAD as it sounds in ROAD instead of as it sounds in RODE.

Sounds logical, Sy
The family, like many of that era, loved a nickname!
