Have found the original and looking with my magnifyer the hat does not have a badge. Haven't tried scanning yet but to give a description. The front side is sort of pleated ad the bit that I thought was a badge is just part of the pleating. Bit like the top of a mans tie which I think is called the knot. It also has what looks like frills around the base bit like the what cap underneath.

The white blob on the side of her neck looks like a bow. Probably the strings of her white cap and she also appears to be wearing a wide white belt.

The cape has no collar, 4 buttons and long slits for the hands to come out of.

The photo has written at the bottom - A portrait by Van Trolga - London and Brighton. On the back  hand written in ink is Edie With Love. Plus in pencil is Nigg2 This I think would be the photographers ref.

As the studio looks like it's in the south of England then I think it may well be the sister Hilda who looked after Noel Coward, although I don't know if this was taken then. Perhaps she's at a London Hospital.

Edie being Edith Adelaide the twin sister of Amy Gertrude. However I am starting to think perhaps it is their younger sister Hilda.

Rather thought that kathb.

I have been comparing this photo with one of Hilda's taken much later when she was a member of the College of Nursing and I rather think it is her  at a younger age.

I also think that as it is taken at a photographers studio then it may have been when she was doing private nursing so I suppose it will remain a mystery.

Hi, Jean, what is the photograph of her when she became a member of the college of nursing  and was it the Royal College of Nursing?  This might also allow some further research.

Hi kath
There is a badge on her jacket  CN which I had found out was College of Nursing and this is now RCN. In fact I had thought it a photo of an elderly aunt but when I asked her she said it was Aunt Hilda and not her.

Haven't investigated with the RCN yet as she changed her name from Matilda Jane Harris to Hilda Dalrymple Harries and I do not know when or why.

No idea where the Dalrymple came from but adding an e to Harris will have altered how the surname was pronounced. It has been written down as Harries on two earlier census records so presume some members  of the family wanted to sound better than just plain Harris, or maybe they still had Welsh accents  ;)

Hi, Jean, as a first step you could try searching the RCN archives with both her names the following is the link
http://rcnarchive.rcn.org.uk/
The other possible way of tracing her is through her registration as a nurse.   I will get back to you with the site

Jean, nursing registration did not come in until circa 1920.  Given that she is wearing the College of Nursing badge, she might have been one of the first nurses to register.  The following link will take you to the site of the organisation founded to support the registration and it looks as if they hold the registration list for the early 20's.  Have a look here is the link
http://www.rbna.org.uk/registration.asp
If she is on one of these lists it will give her training hospital.

The UK Nursing Registers have now been added to ;http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=60423

Well worth a look if you have names and dates.
