Donaghdee and Groomsport- old photos
« on: Sunday 11 July 10 11:36 BST (UK) »
My wife's grandfather, Alexander Clegg, lived at 20 Shore Street, Donaghadee. I have a photo taken below the fort/moat of him in a horse and cart delivering milk. The name seems to be Herdstown Dairy, I think. My father in law mentioned Delashbury or Delashery Dairy. Is Herdstown an old townland near Donaghadee? Does anyone recognise the Delashbury/Delashery name - I am sure this is not the correct spelling.

While I am here, could anyone shed any light on these photos? They may be in the Groomsport area?

I've split your 2 posts with the lovely photos from the Copeland Island threa so they wouldn't be overlooked.

There's a Herdstown House in that area-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Map showing Herdstown townland :
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/MAPS/DonaghadeeTownlands.htm

a townland 2 km W of Donaghadee; 240 acres; means ' Herd's townland'; only a townland since 1810; some bog here; National School & railway line here in 1863.

The family your father in law was referring to was probably the DeLacherois's who where the principal land owners in Donaghadee from around the 1770s. Descendants of the family still live in the Manor House in High St. today.

Herdstown is a townland in the Parish of Donaghadee.

The old row of houses in the photograph is still standing today, but with a row now facing and is named Castle Street.

I am not very familiar with the area so it may very well be Portavo. Next time I am down that way I must have a look at the place. I got the photo from my father in law who is a Clegg and whose mother was a Niblock. I have not got any information about the photographs at all - I'm afraid it all seems lost in the mists of time. If you can shed any light as to what these men were doing it would be appreciated. Johnny Conn
