Ann,

This newspaper topic was good idea.  Hopefully someone has access to one.  I would one day like to take a trip to the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. because I know that they have a huge collection of newspapers there.  They would most definitely have the newspaper we're looking for there.  If you want to take a look at their site, it's www.loc.gov.

Think I've already gone through hundreds of 1930 entries for all sorts of variants of surname, birth date etc., looking in every state.  I don't think New Jersey comes into the time-frame until 1957 ish   :(

Alright.  Well,  I know Hugh and Margaret had a house in New Jersey in 1954 because they had a 50th anniversary party there.

Quick question: Do you know who the parents of John Withers (b. 1850) were?

Thanks again,
Steven

Quick answer would be, no.  I have'nt researched the family in Scotland, I have only looked up the brothers and there arrival etc in the USA.

I would have to start to find them on the 1901 Scotland Census which is the earliest available to me and work my way back to see if I could find that information.  Have you not got access to the Scotland Census ?

Ok.
No I don't have any access to the Scottish Census.  Do you know how I can access them for free?

Thats sort of near enough the time frame I was looking at but before your time.  Your father must have been there - do you know the married names of the daughters ?
Another question springs to mind - was the son Hugh Wither 1905 married - would you know the name of a possibly wife for him ?

Just checking to see what I can find in Scotland - this link gives 1881 Census free - might help get you started.

Thank you, I'll look through that right now.
Yes, he was married.  Her first name was Jessie and I have to ask my sister about the last name.
I have to ask my brother and sister about the dates as soon as they get back from vacation.  When I find out all of them, I will let you know.

Thank you Steven - it all helps.

This is what I see for 1901 Tarbolton. Ayrshire but it does'nt give alot of detail I'm afraid. Might help you log the names though. Any good.

Yes, these are some of the children.  I was on the website you gave me where I can look at 1881 census.  But when I typed in an ancestor, it gave me results but I couldn't view them.  Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for looking up those names.  Where do we go from here?
