Another pair of Eyes needed!! Please
« on: Tuesday 27 July 10 00:21 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Today I got a photocopy of a paper from 1871. They are Dismissal papers of a Police Constable who had only been in the force a matter of months.

But a couple of words are hard to make out?

I have:   Dismissed for ?**?  ?***? up in a room of a beer house on his beat at 5/10pm
on Sunday the 30th April and reprising  his sergant to open the door.

Thanks Cancan

Hi Cancan

Think it may be "for being locked up in a room of a beer house" Also think it's refusing not reprising at the end

I read it as this:-

"Dismissed for being locked up in a room of a beer house on his beat at 5/10 P.M. on Sunday, 30th Apr. and refusing his sergeant to open the door."

Naughty lad, wouldn't let the sarge have a beer  ;D

Hi,

Thank you!!

This is for a friend of mine who is 94 tomorrow and for a present I have been researching her tree, as much as possible.

I found out he was a Police Constantable 400 on the 1871 census, so took a trip to the LRO to see record, but their photocopying machine is not very good.  Looked great on screen but ink just seems to be blotchy!!  Didn't read it before hand just found and printed off.

His appointment was 24 Nov 1870, he was attached to the 400 on 16 Dec 1871, incident happened on the 30 April 1871 and removed from the force on 8 May 1871. Not a long Career!!! :o

Possibly the fact he was a gardener before he joined and was used to a tipple sat in the sun.  He went back to being a gardener!!! :D

Thanks again!!

Cancan :)
