Nonconformist registers in Blandford Forum and area
« on: Sunday 01 August 10 14:18 BST (UK) »
Hello:
I suspect that some of our Dunfords may have been nonconformists. This family lived at Tarrant Gunville for about a hundred years or so. The parish registers show entries from c.1740 to the mid-1800s. However, for many of this family, there were entries for burials, but without earlier baptisms.
I wonder if anyone subscribed to this rootschat forum knows the history of nonconformists or dissenting denominations in this part of Dorset. It appears that the Dorset History Centre holds nonconformist records for Poole and for Bournemouth. Were there also nonconformist congregations in or near Blandford Forum? If so, where might those records be held, please?
Thank you, in advance.
Alison

Hi,

The OPC for Tarrant Gunville might be able to advise you;  contact details on the Tarrant Gunville page:

http://www.opcdorset.org

The Blandford Forum page has a list of Dissenters Baptisms.

Dorset History centre should also be able to advise you.

Most pre-1837 nonconformist registers held by The National Archives. If you search their Catalogue www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue you can find out exactly which ones - use 'Dorset' as the Word or phrase, with RG as the Department or series code, and you'll get the whole list.

The registers are online at www.BMDregisters.co.uk, and you can search them by name
