Wrong Initial on Gravestone *completed*
« on: Sunday 08 August 10 16:30 BST (UK) »
I unearthed a bit of a mystery when I found a relatives gravestone at St Botolph Church, Banningham, Norfolk. I know that it is him because the dates are right so is his regiment and regiment number, I also managed to find the grave listed on another website which told me his parents names which are also correct... Just wondering why he has the wrong first initial?, could it be something as simple as being known by another name?. I have found his birth on the free BMD index which says his name is Felix and I have also recently purchased his death certificate which also says his name was Felix. The initial on the gravestone is J. Has this ever happened before?.

Many Thanks

The writing at the bottom suggests that he was known as Edward

Hi ang1985

Welcome to Rootschat :D

His Medal Index Card has him as Felix Edward so it looks as if the J could be a mistake. Strange  ??? By the way if you don't already have them his service records are on Ancestry.

Many thanks for the replies, Thanks for the tip about Felix's military records, I have already found them. I'm thinking it must be a general mistake as well, there doesn't seem to be any other explanation for it. ???

If it is indeed an error then contact the CWGC who will correct it in due course.

Hi,

If the original request was written in old-style handwriting, an 'F' might well be mistaken for a 'J'.
