Jane Baguley, Wilhelm & Adelhist Kuss-Westgate 1871

Hello to all!

My maternal grandmother very often wore a very unusual brooch which she'd inherited from her (Newcastle born) mother, Jane Baguley/Bagulay Bell (m William Burcham 1872)

Grandma said that Jane had been presented with it by her employer, a jeweller, to thank her for nursing his wife devotedly during her pregnancy.

Recently I managed to discover that Jane was employed as a servant in the household of Wilhelm Kuss, a jeweller,  his wife Adelhist (sp? possibly Adelheid) & their 2 month old daughter, Wilhelmina, at the time of the 1871 census.

Their address was 18 Dawson St, Westgate.


Jane & William migrated to South Australia, abt 6 years later, but I've had no luck in finding any further trace of the Kuss family and I'd like to know what became of them.

Can anybody help, please?

Engelbert (20) and "William" (25) KUSS, born Germany, were both unmarried lodgers in the household of clockmaker German KUSS in Newcastle in 1861: RG9/3824/65/13

This seems to be Wilhelmina's baptism (with Latinised names, IGI extracted record):

in Kellys Directory for 1883 there is Andrew Kuss & Co Jewellers 42 Collingwood St Newcastle and a G Kuss & Sons Watchmakers 6 Northumberland St

and in the same directory for 1894...A Kuss & Co 58 Falconer St Newcastle and two Kuss & Co's one at 42 Collingwood St and the other at 37a Shield Rd.
