SteveG's Scavenger Hunt....Everyone Welcome To Join In
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 11:28 BST (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and I do believe you'll have a fun time with this one.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

Barbara

                                   ***************************

Mary Elizabeth Burge. B. abt 1860, Exeter, Devon, by all accounts. Putative parents; William Burge (1825 - 1882) X Elizabeth Chubb. (1836 - ?)

'Polly' married William Huntley (1843 - ? Alive on 1911) on 28-Jan-1878, in Weymouth, Dorset. And off on their travels they went. Showing up in Oxford, Sussex, Dorset, back and forth. Typically Hawking and Knife Grinding etc.

Legend has it that Polly bore some twenty odd kids. I've found seventeen of them. So, she was prolific alright.

Census' are virtually useless for them. 1901 and 1911 only show them. Yet, I can trace them, every couple of years, from their childrens BC's. One of the Huntley's once told me that Polly was a full blooded Irish Gypsy and that one of her sons died in a knife fight in a Belfast alleyway. Might there be some Irish connection I'm missing?

'Mission Impossible' appears to be finding and proving Polly's Birth. That really is the Grail of my existence. That aside? I'd just appreciate some fresh eyes on this one. What do ye see?

Polly is not really a diminutive form of Elizabeth, although it is for Marjorie, Margaret etc.
it is sometimes used for Mary which i think got transfused from Molly to Polly

Presumably you have the marriage cert. perhaps you can give us more details from there
Such as address at time fathers names and occupations
Witnesses
The more details the better
And the children’s birth certificates, if they were of the wandering type they don’t tend to be fervent in registering the births what was mothers name given at this time?

The children with them in 1901 seem to have been born along the south coast.

Brighton, Midhurst, Ticehurst, Poole and Chichester were they were living in 1901.
