Woolley Sanitorium / TB Hospital
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 09:26 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Wonder if anyone can help?

My Grandfather (born 1911) had TB as a child and was sent to Woolley Sanatorium near Slaley in Northumberland.  I would like to find out more about the place and what treatment they received.  Also I have some photos of children with nurses, which I presume are from his stay there, but I'm not sure.

I have googled but to no avail.  Any info would be gratefully received.

Regards

Wooley Hospital was built in 1916 for first world war gas victims, later became a sanatorium, and  closed down in 1976.

My grandfather was born in 1911 and told me himself he was in Wooley as he could remember being there and I know he was only young, no more than 8 when he left.  My Great uncle could remember going to visit him, and he was still at school (born 1903).

Any further info would be good.  Are there any records left and if so, where would they be?

The Sanatorium was apparently associated with  Hexham General Hospital

but there do not appear to be any records.

The sanatorium records are held at the archive centre, woodhorn, near Ashington, Northumberland. You need ID to get a card to search the records. They are open wed to sun from 10 to 4. The records they hold about wooley include minutes of meetings of the house committee  from 1949-69, and admissions and discharge registers from 1943 - 74. Hope this helps.
Oh yes ~ you can phone them on 01670 528080

Hi JaneB123

Thanks for that info.  I'm in a bit of a pickle as my grandfather was supposed to be there when he was a child and as he was born 1911, I'm not sure I'm on the right place.  He was adamant that he was at Woolley, but from the posts on here, it appears his alledged stay was too early.  Not sure what I'm going to do next, but I suppose I'll keep looking.

Regards

it's worth having a look at their records ~it might give you some clues. There can't have been that many TB sanatoriums in northumberland!

I have read there was also a sanatorium at Barrasford which was up the River North Tyne from Hexham but know nothing else about it.

The Newcastle and Northumberland Sanatorium at Barrasford was erected in 1907 for 50 patients. See http://hexham.journallive.co.uk/2010/01/heritage-project-brings-lost-n.html
