James McArthur of Campbeltown
« on: Monday 30 August 10 10:27 BST (UK) »
Can someone help me ?

I'm researching the McArthur family and as far as I can see, the family is Campbeltown-based since the 1750's.  I hope !

Nonetheless, my 2xGr James McArthur as seen on the 1871 census cannot be confirmed by the FamilySearch site.    Is this just one of those things ?

James McArthur was Born about 1827 in Campbeltown.  Butcher:  Wife Catherine Hawthorn; several children..., with son, Gr. Robert McFarlane McArthur in my line. Normally, James's father is also James McArthur, born 1795 and married to Nancy according to the 1851 census)

Unfortunately, the only "FamilySearch" James McArthur of Campbeltown is one born on the 22 Nov. 1827 and son to Neill McArthur.  Much as Neill was probably a charming bloke..., hope he's not one of us !  :)

A gentle shove-to-move-on by someone would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks..., Iain.

Hi Iain

Likely, is just one of those things!

Not all births/christenings were registered in the Old Parish Registers (these are only for the established Church of Scotland,ie. Presbyterian), some of which are included on IGI. Have you checked the more complete indexes on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ? It may also be that registers have been lost or destroyed over the years, other common reasons why entries sometimes don't show. Or the family did not belong to the est. CofS.

Sounds like you have his parents' details (from his death cert?). You could try checking for births of siblings as well to these parents for additional info on his family.

See also that James and Catherine had a son in 1855, James b. 1855 in Campeltown. If you haven't viewed this certificate on line at SP, certainly one to look at. Birth certs for this first year of official registration, ran over two pages of the register with a wealth of additional info for one year only.

hi Iain  :)

do you have james mcarthur's death cert. ?
this would probably be the best bet for finding out his parents
you say he is on the 1871 census and by 1881 it looks like his wife catherine is
widowed -
catherine mcarthur 59 boarder widowed born campbeltown

scotlandspeople website has a catherine mcarthur(other surname hawthorn)
death 1895 campbeltown born c1822

also james mcarthur death 1872 cambeltown born c1830  :-\

Is this your James at home for the 1841 census?

James Mcarthur 46, coal miner
Agnes Mcarthur 46
Archibald Mcarthur 22
Rachel Mcarthur 15
James Mcarthur 13 b. Scotland
Agnes Mcarthur 11 b. Scotland
Mary Mcarthur 9
John Mcarthur 4

Address: Drumlunble, Campbeltown

Nancy and Ann are common variants of Agnes.

If the right family, your James and sister Agnes are showing as born outside the county of Argyll. Father's work as a coal miner might have meant that whilst they originated from Campeltown, his work may have taken his out of Argyll and some of the children born elsewhere.

Was James' mother Agnes McMillan? If so, these are some births showing for the children above to a James McArthur and Agnes McMillan. IGI only have a 'girls' batch' showing, SP may have more details including the male births/christenings:

1. CATHARINE MCARTHUR Birth: 11 JUL 1820/ Christening: 13 JUL 1820 Campbeltown, Argyll
2. MARGARET MCARTHUR Birth: 29 JUN 1822/ Christening: 30 JUN 1822 Campbeltown, Argyll
3. RACHEL MCARTHUR Birth: 06 JAN 1825/ Christening: 11 JAN 1825 Campbeltown, Argyll
4. AGNES MCARTHUR  Christening: 27 MAY 1829 Old Monkland, Lanark
5. MARY MCARTHUR Birth: 28 SEP 1831/ Christening: 28 SEP 1831 Campbeltown, Argyll

Is this the 1851 census entry you had. Good fit with that possible 1841 entry - everyone showing as born in Campeltown:

James Mcarthur 56, coal miner
Nancy Mcarthur 56
James Mcarthur 23, coal miner

Address: Drumlunble, Campbeltown

There is a family tree on this line on Ancestry. I think they are following the line of potential sister Catherine. They have James Snr.'s death in 1869 in Drumlunble, Campbeltown. His parents are given as Archibald McArthur and a Janet Watson. You should be able to verify this yourself to confirm these details given the death date.

No details showing on the tree for mother Agnes McMillan, except possible marriage on 7 Mar 1815 in Campeltown to James McArthur.

Ev, just re-reading!

If Catherine Hawthorn is showing as widowed in 1881, from the entry you have, this Drumlunble McArthur family may be wrong (although it feels so right!). Can't have James, husband of Catherine Hawthorn, alive and well in 1881 with another wife  :-\

Lets see what Iain has been able to verify in respect of his James' parents and death details for him I think.....
