Philip Vaughan, solicitor, mayor, Brecon
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 12:41 BST (UK) »
I'm researching this chap who was solicitor in Brecon from 1821 [partner with Thomas Bold]. 1841 census has him in Lion Street - I'd like to know which house. Although he was thrice mayor of Brecon, the local papers failed to mention his death [25.11.1865 in Aberystwyth] - why? Had he upset the locals? Anyone know of a photo or portrait of him?  His will of 1863 names one of his properties as the 'Old Buck' in Brecon: anyone know it? can it be photographed ?  He also owned The Little Bell' in Brecon; was that part of The Bell' [large inn, now derelict property] ?
Please note: I have all his census info and details of marriage, family and parentage so I am not asking anyone to research that for me - thank you!
Phil

Found the following under Historical Directories

Pigot & Cos Directory of Derbys..., Herefs,....1835
Brecon - Attorneys
Vaughan and Bevan, Lion St

Brecon - Nobility, Gentry, Clergy
Bold, Hugh esq, (barrister), Struet

Pigot & Cos Directory of Berks, Bucks.... Pt 2 1844
Brecon - Attorneys
Vaughan and Bevan, Lion St

Brecon - Fire &c Office Agents
ALFRED (fire) and COMMERCIAL
   Vaughan and Bevan, Lion St

Brecon -  Nobility, Gentry, Clergy
Mrs Bold - , Lion St

The above Vaughan may not be your Phillip. I can't find a specific reference to a Phillip or even P. Vaughan nor pinpoint the House in Bold St.

When did he leave Brecon for Aberystwyth?

regards

Hi Phil

Have you tried the ISYS search at the Nat Library:

http://isys.llgc.org.uk/

I selected Archives and Manuscripts and put in Philip Vaughan and got quite a few hits on your man. You could also try the properties as well.

I've found masses on my family through this search engine.

Apologies if you've already done this.
