Wow! I’ve hit the motherlode (bad pun!)

Thank you so much Carole and Monica.

It’s going to take me a day or so to “process” all this wonderful info.

Again, thanks

Hi Peter

I have replied to your PM but I will put the info here too

John Brodie married Agnes Mckenzie in Linlithgow on 17 Nov 1850. John's father was Archibald Brodie and Agnes's father was William Mckenzie. (this is from www.familysearch.org)

The census shows Archibald Brodie in Linlithgow with a wife named Janet in 1841, 1851 & 1861. (Unfortunately there's no John in 1841 but he would have been old enough to be working elsewhere)
Archibald was born in Kirkliston ~1794

Baptism record (familysearch again) names his parents as John Brodie and Mary Reid who married in Kirkliston or Ratho on 21 or 22 July 1780.  They had several other children whose baptisms can be found at www.familysearch.org ..  This couple are my 5 x gt grandparents which makes us 5th cousins once removed (Hi!)

edited to add: hacking my way through the mistranscriptions I think John Brodie (the one who married Agnes McKenzie) was probably born in Ecclesmachan

Thank you for the clarifications and extensions, Caroline, Carole and Monica.  You have pushed my tree back three generations!

And my Aunt Dorothy, who will be 100 years old on May 9th  thanks you as well!

Caroline - 5th cousins?  Whew!  I’ll PM you about the details

I found a bit of info (and a picture) on Woodcockdale Stables and its relation to the Union Canal in Linlithgow  http://www.flickr.com/photos/rcahms/4522922695/

Peter

P.S. I have John Brodie marrying Agnes McKenzie on 17 Nov 1850 at Torphichen not Linlithgow (from Family search – following Carole’s FS path). Linlithgow is, however, where their children were born.

This is an update and revision for this thread.

Yesterday, much to my surprise, I discovered that my great grandmother’s name was Margaret Easton Weir, not Margaret McKenzie!

For years and years now, everyone assumed that her maiden name was McKenzie, primarily because our grandmother was named Agnes McKenzie Brodie. It turns out that she was named for her grandmother who was Agnes McKenzie.

So I’ve gone back and corrected her name in this thread!

Peter, shall we start again!

I assume this new info has come from hopefully John Brodie and Margaret Easton Weir's wedding cert  ::)

Have you managed to confirm their parents' names?

Monica  :)

Yes Monica.

I now have a photocopy of my grandmother, Agnes McKenzie Brodie’s “Extract Entry of Birth” listing her mother as M. E. Weir as well as a very clear “Margaret Easton Weir” on Agnes’ an image of the York County (Ontario) Marriage Register!  100% certain!

The problem is that Margaret Easton Weir died when her daughter (my grandmother, Agnes) was only 4. So she barely knew her mother!

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find Margaret’s parents. She was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire according to the 1881 Scotland Census. I tried both Ancestry and FamilySearch (both basic & Pilot). The closest I came was to a Margaret Weir birth:13 Nov 1854 (A bit early - the 1881 Scotland Census estimates her birth year as 1860) in Torphichen, West Lothian,  Her parents, however were William Weir & Margaret Easton!  There’s that Easton again! :o

It might be that this Margaret died as an infant and a later daughter (born ~1860) was named Margaret.  Am I stretching things? ???
