The 1831 census only listed head of household so it's difficult to know which, if either, could be the correct Thomas Kennedy. Unfortunately Kennedy is an extremely common surname in the Garvagh area.

Any idea when the Kennedy family went to America?

thanks for your replies.

Thomas and family would have gone to America/Canada sometime after John was born in 1842, their next child was born in Canada in 1848 (Charles)

One of his kids immigration year on a Canadian census shows as 1843

Perhaps check the 1841 census?

1841 census doesn't survive for this area. Will have a dig through my files but without a townland it may be impossible to pinpoint the correct family.

I can't find any evidence of your Thomas Kennedy in First Garvagh records (children's baptisms, earlier visitation lists, etc.) but marriages ususally take place in bride's church so perhaps he wasn't a member of First Garvagh.

I found some notes I found a year ago:
they "came from County Derry, Northern Ireland, at Londonderry on the Foyle River. Bogside near the old historic fort of Londonderry. My grandfather played around the old fort.

I also found an obituary of William Kennedy that says he was born at Armagh.

thanks, however, I think that my Thomas Kennedy grew up in Londonderry but raised his family after 1829 in Armagh. So would have been in Armagh from about 1829 to 1843.

So I think I need a check on Prestbyterian Churches in Armagh in those years.

I think I am on the wrong message board for that?
